Following their recent Dublin show at the Button Factory, up and comers KlangTherapeuten sat down with WWD to chat all about their rise and what’s on the agenda for the next year. We talked House, labels and even a little German, enjoy!
It’s tradition for us to do a little introduction for our readers here at When We Dip, so in keeping with that can you tell us a bit about yourselves and how KlangTherapeuten began?
Klangtherapeuten is a duo existing of the two guys Philipp (21 years), living in Munich and Felix (24 years) from Duesseldorf. Philipp and me know each other because we once were neighbors in my hometown Duesseldorf. I spent a lot of time with Philipp because his elder brother was a good friend of mine. In course of time we found out that we share our passion for electronic music. In this way, the project ‘KlangTherapeuten’ began: we bought our first mixer, had our first small gigs and we began to fiddle with producing tracks. Year after year we got a bit bigger and finally began to produce our own tracks, which was the reason why our booking agency “MFM Booking” became aware of us.
We’re intrigued by the name and our German isn’t the best, can you explain it for us?
It isn’t surprising that you can’t understand our name because it is a neologism, it doesn’t exist in the German language this way. It is hard to explain, but ‘Klang’ means in English as much as ‘sound’ or ‘music’ and ‘Therapeuten’ is the german word for ‘therapists’. For us the name hasn’t got a deeper sense, but maybe you could say that we try to get the people relaxed and happier because our music.
You guys are synonymous with a deep, melodic house and tech sound, how was that developed? Were you always playing a similar style?
No, we have to admit that we have an enormous change relating to our style of music behind us. When we started with DJ’ing a few years ago, we liked faster and harder sound. I think the reason is that we were comparatively young and when you are young you don’t know exactly what you like or what you want and you often chance your style and your opinion. But over time we noticed that the melodic house, how you described it, is our favorite style. Philipp and me, we are two guys who are enjoying life, so gloomy sound wouldn’t fit to us at all.
There’s an abundance of talent in and coming out of Germany these days with plenty of German labels to nurture it. What’s the goal for KlangTherapeuten? Do you have your eyes set on signing for a big German label or are your eyes further afield?
Yes, that’s right. In Germany you are competing with a lot of other talents when you are a young deejay at the beginning of your career. But with a lot of of these young deejays or deejay-duos we are friends with and we all try push each other for mutual benefit. Since June this year we are members of the great booking agency “MFM Booking” and we are really pleased of that. We are at the beginning of our career and we don’t know what will happen in the future. There are a lot of of excellent labels in Germany, but it I think it would be megalomaniac to think of this at the moment.
Is there any other rising German talent out there that you’d recommend for the WWD readers?
We have a lot of talented dj´s and pruducers like “Freiboiter”, “Max Manie” or “Schneizzle” 🙂
