With a string of stellar releases on the likes of Intec, Bedrock & Sci+Tec in 2014, Ramiro Lopez rightly earned himself the reputation as one of techno’s finest rising talents. 2015 won’t see him rest on his laurels, however. He’s kicked off the year with a bang, dropping a quality new EP on Coyu’s Suara imprint and this is just the beginning. We were delighted to have him join us for a chat to get all the details on the upcoming year. Topics include Cathexis, the rise of the Spanish producers, BPM Festival and more new music on the horizon!
WWD : First off thanks for taking the time to chat Ramiro! Tell us about the new ‘Cathexis’ release on Suara! Was it long in the pipeline?
Ramiro : Hola! Thanks to you for having me. My pleasure.
I’m very excited about ‘ Cathexis ‘ . After the good results with ‘ Tuna Ice Cream ‘, my Suara EP in the summer, I had in mind to do another one on the kitties label before the end of the year. I’ve been working on this target since then, testing ideas, etc. .. Finally, Coyu decided these 3 ones were the best, so here they are!
I’m receiving great feedback so far, 2014 has been a great year for me and this is the icing on the cake.
WWD : Suara and Sincopat, both home to yourself, have become two prominent Spanish imprints in 2014, is their good form reflective of a budding scene in Spain?
Ramiro : I started with both labels almost since the beginning and both
believed in me. I’m honoured to be part of them . Spain is improving day by day. There are many talented artists here and many of them doing great outside the country. The best thing is they will be rising and rising in 2015.
WWD : You just hit 50K on Facebook celebrating with a groovy free download ‘Masoul’. When you first started off as a youngster did you envisage making it on a global scale?
Ramiro : Actually if I look at the past, I can’t believe it! I mean, I’m a dreamer, I always have my goals and when I reach them, I go for new ones, step by step. I’ve wanted to do this since I saw a DJ play live back in late 90’s but back then, this seemed so far and difficult. I’m happy and thankful to all the people that support my music and follow my work so I thought to do a special track and and give it away for free would be a nice way to say thanks. But this is just the beginning!
WWD : You’ve had an impressive year with releases on the likes of Intec, Bedrock & Sci+Tec. In your eyes, what would make 2015 a good one for you?
Ramiro : I’m focusing on some specific goals and working towards them already. I wanna keep working with Suara and Intec and I’m also on a few other labels I’d love to. Some good surprises are coming.
WWD : Any parties/venues you’d love to play in next year?
Ramiro : There are many places I’d love to such as: Awakenings at Gashouder (Amsterdam), Berghain (Berlin), Some big festival like Monegros and Sonar (Spain), Exit (Serbia), I love Techno (Belgium) during the summer, to do my first gig in Tokyo, start to tour USA… so many goals to reach! But I’m sure I’ll achieve some of them. In fact, I’m Playing at BPM Festival (Playa Del Carmen) for the first time January 2015 which has been one of my wishes since a long time ago so I’m starting the year very well.
WWD : We’re closing out 2014 so we’ve a few quickfire questions for you!
Track of the year?
Ramiro : Traumer – Hoodlum
WWD : Most impressive live performer?
Ramiro : Adam Beyer
WWD : One thing you want to see less of in 2015?
Ramiro : Haters and Drama
WWD : One thing you want to see more of next year?
Ramiro : Smiley people and more and more Techno and Electronic music lovers and supporters.
WWD : Lastly, what can we look forward to from you over the coming months? More new music? Any big dates on the horizon?
Ramiro : Regarding music, I have a EP on Terminal M along side Arjun Vagale coming up in February and also a couple of remixes. Plus, there is some other good stuff coming but it’s top secret at the moment. As I told you before, I’m starting the year playing in the Suara party at BPM Festival in Playa del Carmen and some other good gigs like Sonora and Florida 135 (two of the most important clubs in Spain) in January/Feb. The agencies are working at full stream right now and there are many gigs booked for the first part of the year already, even for the summer. I’m very excited about it!
