Dutch pair Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers land in Dublin this Friday. The boys will be transmitting their intricate electronic sounds in live performance at Pygmalion. Weval have been causing quite the stir since signing their ‘Easier’ EP to renowned imprint ‘Kompakt’ late last year and with the hard work on an album already well underway, their ascent looks only set to continue. With this in mind, we caught up with Harm and Merijn to get the lowdon on their recent exploits and their views on what will be there first trip to the Irish capital. It’s all below!
WWD : Thanks for taking the time to chat guys! What have you been up to this week? Are you all set for the trip this weekend?
Weval : You’re welcome! This week we have been working on a new remix, very excited about the track so far. And yes we’re set, last week we practiced a lot and came up with new ideas for the live performance. We are really looking forward to the gig!
WWD : Is it your first time in Dublin?
Weval : Yes, we’ve never been here before. It is our first time in Ireland.
WWD : For those who may be heading along, can you tell us a bit about your live set up?
Weval : Regarding to sound it’s a bit more dance floor-orientated than our EP. All the beats are chopped up in different loops and the melodies run through VST’s synths. We can improvise with (the sound of) the melodies for example.
WWD : The ‘Easier EP’ got an incredible reaction at the end of last year. Is a follow-up in the pipeline?
Weval : Yes, we are working hard on our first album, we hope to finish it before summer.
WWD : Signing to Kompakt is quite a feat for any artist in this domain. How did it come about?
Weval : Our booker back then talked to someone from Kompakt during Amsterdam Dance Event. That’s how they got to know our music. Apparently they liked it and asked us to work together.
WWD : Have things changed much since joining the Kompakt crew?
Weval : It feels a bit more ‘professional’ in a way, because we work together with other people more often. Regarding our performances, a year ago we had never played outside Holland, so the whole traveling experience is new. But in the end we are just making music and that doesn’t feel much different.
WWD : Dublin is the first of some big dates over the next two months. Where else are you guys looking forward to playing?
Weval : Besides Dublin this weekend we are very excited about playing in London in March. We are also looking forward to our Paradiso show the 24th of March, in Amsterdam. It’s our first own club show and we just heard it’s almost sold out. As a visitor we have seen the most awesome bands there for many years. Playing there by ourselves is a very special experience.
WWD : Lastly, you’ve just announced that you’ll be appearing at Best Kept Secret Festival in the Netherlands. Can we expect a string of festival dates around Europe this Summer?
WWD : We think we’ll have a nice summer, but we’re not sure which festivals have confirmed yet. This summer we are working on our album as well as playing on festivals, so we have got a lot to do!
