Cinema, aka Peter Fleming is an Irish producer from Newbridge. He was once one half of duo ‘Effy’ but both decided to go their own separate ways back in 2014. Since Peter’s departure from Effy, he has released ‘Cinema EP’ and ‘Shapes EP’ both receiving a lot of attention with thousands of plays over on Soundcloud. Cinema’s most recent release being ‘Horizon’, a deep melodic track with tonnes of energy through some intriguing vocal samples, a soft yet uplifting bass and a mixture of synths. ‘Horizon’ is certainly a summer feel track.
We shall be keeping a close eye on the young Irish producer. We expect 2015 to be a big year for Cinema.
We recently got together with Cinema for a little interview in an attempt to get inside the Irish producers head. He has also provided our WWD readers with an extraordinary mix:
WWD : Thanks for joining us Peter. It’s great to finally meet the man behind the name, ‘Cinema’. I will start off by asking, what made you choose the name Cinema? It’s an interesting name choice and I’m intrigued to know how it came about?
I was sitting at home one evening and had decided I was going to look for a name for these new tracks I’d been writing. At the time I was very fond of playing this little Spanish guitar which a friend had left me. The guitar was covered in paper mâché, so it had newspaper articles covering the entire body. I picked it up and said to myself I’m going read an article and the first word which takes my attention can be the name. So I’m scanning the article and I see ‘Cinema’. I look to my roommate and I’m like Cinema? And he’s like yeah cinema! The more I thought about then the more I liked it. I studied film in college you see, but also I think that my music is sort of image provoking, at least it is in my head! So I suppose you could say the name just presented itself.
WWD : Having been following your music for a while now I am really loving the tracks that you are releasing, how would you describe your style of music?
Tough question. I don’t really like the idea of putting a label or genre onto it because I’d find that limiting. But I think it’s just a collection of good sounds and feelings. For the most part it’s electronic but I’ve started playing both electric & acoustic guitar on some of the newer tracks, so that’s a whole other thing now too. It’s warm music that you can dance to, if that makes any sense!
WWD : Who would you say has influenced you the most in terms of the music you are producing?
To be honest I would say the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and in particular their old guitar player John Frusciante. It may not sound like it at all when you listen to my music, but I’m so inspired by everything John and the rest of the band have done. Their mentality towards music, and passion for their art is something I think every musician could learn a lot from. I listen to a lot of 70’s & 80’s stuff too, so many great artists and music styles came from that period. There’s also loads of great electronic artists around now that I’m influenced by. I could name people for hours, but I’ve included plenty of influences in the mix!
WWD : Would John Frusciante be someone you would aspire to produce a track or record with?
Writing a record with John Frusciante would be amazing, he does completely analog electronic stuff now, and just had an acid house album released so it’d be interesting! Even to sit and watch him going through the process of writing something would be an absolute dream!
WWD : 2015 has seen your tracks getting a lot of attention over on Soundcloud, as well as some very appreciative reviews for the ‘Cinema EP’ and also the ‘Shapes EP’. What have you made of the reaction to your music so far?
The reaction to my music has been really great. There’s a really nice sense of fulfilment knowing that I can feel a certain way and write and song, and then there is somebody else out there listening and it makes them feel something too. I am so grateful for the fact that I can share that with anyone!
WWD : What can we expect from Cinema over the next few months, do you have anything in the pipeline that you can tell us about?
I have just finished a remix for this really great band called Lyttet, you should check them out if you haven’t! That’s coming out on a sort of remix EP alongside three other remixes in the coming weeks. I’m also working towards a live show, it’s going to take some time but it will get there. The concept is to play the majority of it on guitar, because that’s how I write it. So it will be its own thing completely, raw versions of the tracks. I’ll be doing Dj sets too but it is live music, not Dj set music in my opinion so it’s important to me to differentiate between the two, which is why I haven’t included any of my own tracks in the mix.
WWD: Have you considered the possibility of releasing a physical record or is it still early days for something like that?
The concept of having my own record is something I’ve always liked for certain! But it’s not the most important thing with this project for me. I’m happier giving music away for free if it means it’s accessible to the people who want to enjoy it. But with time maybe the opportunity for a record will arise and yeah 100% I would love that.
WWD :Have you got any gigs lined up and will we be seeing you at any festivals this year?
Gig wise it’s quiet. I really haven’t been focusing on gigs at all, I’ve just been enjoying the writing. But I am playing at Valentia Isle festival at the start of July, so I’m looking forward to that. As I mentioned earlier I’m working towards the live show, so gigs will be something that I’ll be focusing on more and more over the next while.
WWD : It has been an absolute pleasure talking to you Peter, is there anything else you would like to say or add before we end?
I would just like to thank you guys at When We Dip for having me on here, and for all of your support. I’d also like to thank anyone who’s been listening and supporting my music, I’m forever grateful!
