Galway-based producer and DJ John Daly is undoubtedly one of the leading lights in Ireland’s House and Techno community. Aside from leading a number of his own initiatives, which includes co-founding Feel Music (set for a return this year!), he has released on numerous labels renowned across the globe. To name a few; Drumpoet, Secretsundaze and Gerd Janson’s Running Back.
With Daly all set to play Dublin’s Longitude Festival this week alongside the likes of Hudson Mohawke and Jeremy Underground, a catch-up was in order. Hitting him with five of the best, John talked us through his recent exploits, production, the weekend ahead and more!
WWD : Thanks for joining us John!
What has the schedule been like this week? From the recent clips of AVA in Belfast, it looked like some party. What as that experience like? Do you think some day one could create an event of its ilk in Galway?
Yeah good thanks. Summer is here in Galway town so doing my best to get in the water as much as possible.
Yeah it had that slightly unhinged ravey vibe. Really good time, those guys really like to party
I guess so. Why not. The scene is growing all the time here. It was just parties above a restaurant when I moved here and now there’s the club, electric. So slow and steady but yeah with all the international guests passing through its a very healthy scene for such a small town.
We’re big fans of the release on Gerd Janson and Thorsten Scheu’s Running Back. How did that come about?
I sent Gerd 60 techno tracks that I made in a 3 week period. He picked those ones. Theres loads more there.
WWD : Where do you do most of your production? Have you a set base? Are you still working on the second Smoke Clears album?
Yeah its mostly here in my home studio. Its nice and close to my coffee pot. I come up with a few things on the road from time to time too i suppose, but not much.
Yes thats finished about a year ago. Im sitting on it for a while.
WWD : You’re to play Longitude very soon. We’re very excited for it. Will it be a quickie for you or are you planning on enjoying the weekend?
In and out I’m afraid. Oslo the night before and back to Galway for sunday night in electric.
Pissed off I’m missing the chemical brothers. They tour a Korg monopoly. Its my baby.
Looking to the horizon, what are the big dates coming up for you that we should be aware of? Is there plans still to relaunch Feel Music?
Yeah Feel Music is coming back, I’m just trying to get the first record right. I have it, but now im doubting the tracks, cause I’ve heard them so much. It’s wrecking my head. But its happening by the end of the year. I better get my skates on too with these pressing plant delays. I remember when it was a 6 week turnaround. Now its 12 or something. Mad shit.
