With everyone from Marco Corola to Hernan Cattaneo at his back, Berlin-based producer MUUI is carving out a stellar reputation for himself. His intricate, intelligent electronic approach is proving quite simply irresistible. Sitting down with When We Dip this week, the Paranoid Dancer boss detailed the secrets behind his success and the new projects on the horizon. He has also put together an exquisite exclusive recording solely for your listening pleasure!
WWD: Thank for joining us! You’ve had an action packed start to 2015, what have the highlights been for you so far?
Seeing the ‘Escape The Remedies’ live album do quite well making it to the #1 Deep House Album on Beatport alongside being supported by a lot of respected artists was great. Following the album the focus has continued to be on the live element of MUUI and with this I’ve had some super memorable live shows alongside a few great DJ ones in Germany, Switzerland, Kenya and South Africa.
WWD: Producing both as MUUI and Patrik Carrera, how do you separate the two? When you sit down to make a track is it predetermined what project your working on?
They both sit on opposite ends of the spectrum of music I like to both DJ and produce so with each I have different influences, techniques and favored pieces of equipment to achieve what I want. For each I plan when I will complete projects so they remain seperate as they are both so different I don’t work on opposing projects on the same day.
MUUI is a focus on creating something emotive with musical depth coupled with some quirky elements of which I tend to experiment alot with recording techniques and effect chains. Patrik Carrera is a focus on a rougher edge techno sound.
WWD: You’ve been very busy in the studio recently with a lot of unreleased music ready, what can we expect from you over the coming months?
A remix on Crossfrontier Audio in July, an EP on Sudbeat in August and a EP on Crossfrontier Audio later in the year.
Aside from these there is a new album also in the works that will be finished quite soon and the plan for this will be announced.
WWD: Delving into the production process for a moment, can you tell us about some of the key tools you’ve been using frequently in recent studio sessions?
I tend to swap between the equipment I favour but most recently I’ve mostly been using the Roland Tr-8, Nord Lead, Dave Smith Tempest, Access Virus TI and Moog Voyager along with some effect pedals from Jomox, Eventide and Boss. Whilst I do in some way have some preset ideas I can refer to I tend to continually experiment with both equipment and techniques which keeps it fun for me.
WWD: Any festivals/parties high on your bucket list?
I’ve played quite a few times all over Brazil and love the energy of the people and in general the attitude to dance music that exists there. There is two clubs still I’d like to play at being D-Edge and Warung.
WWD: Favourite place to chill out in the Summer months?
In Berlin I really enjoy the outdoor area at Sisyphos and the garden at Berghain. When the weather is perfect its super nice to just hang out, have a laugh and enjoy some nice music in both these places.
WWD: Top three non-dance tracks your listening to right now?
Miami Horror – Sometimes
JOY – Weather
Bibio – Lovers Carvings
WWD: You’ve very kindly put a little mix together for the WWD Readers, what will one find in there?
Its a live set I put together with parts I’ve recorded over the last two months. None of these will be released as singles so they exist just as parts on my computer and in this mix they come together to form a low tempo sound track very reflective on the emotions that the arrival of summer brings with it.
WWD: Before we leave you, what are the big dates on the horizon?
Really looking forward to some upcoming summer gigs in Argentina, Amsterdam and Germany!
