The renowned Picnik Electronique crew brought their party to Cannes on Sunday for the first of 2 parties this summer and having recently sampled the Montreal edition we thought it was time to sample the offerings this side of the Atlantic.
Arriving just after 7 o’ clock, the heat of the sun was relenting from the high 30’s of hours gone by and we were sheltered by the tall pine tines bordering the grounds of the old church about 15 mins outside of the luxurious French town.
We walked into the sounds of a familiar face Oniris, Having previously rinsed episode 15 of our podcast and recently premiering one of his latest tracks ‘Way Out’ with us, we were well prepared for what to expect. He was playing back to back with Carlo Mora and they were both having a great time bringing the tracks in on the huge red Funktion One stacks. With plenty of melodic synths and heavy basslines we’ve come to expect from Oniris, there was also plenty of classics thrown in for good measure with Oxia’s ‘Domino’ was the perfect peak set number.
The lads brought things down a notch and started moving to the techie style ahead of Paco Osuna’s takeover. However there was still time Octave One’s ‘Blackwater’ to be played before the Barcelona man took over. A great set from the Nice representation.
Paco took over around 9pm and things took a noticeable turn for the techier. The tech house veteran used plenty of hi hats and big builds with the Native effects before his heavy basslines returned and the strobe lights flew.
Again the track selection in this set followed that of Oniris and Mora, big tracks. Kink’s recent Cloud Generator got a huge reception and ButRic’s ‘Up’ had us smiling as the big intense builds teased the knowledgable French crowd.
Filled with a variety of ages, the crowd was a nice size and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the Picnik’s offering. No doubt the crowd for its return in August will be bigger again. Top party – Well worth the visit.
