After an unbearable wait, Berlin native Nico Stojan has finally shared his delectable Twisted Manners LP, which is available now on vinyl and digital via URSL. This week, Stojan was kind enough to take five from a hectic schedule to sit down with When We Dip. We ran all our most pressing questions by the talent producer, uncovering his aims, his influences and lots more. It’s all below!
WWD: Thanks for joining us Nico!
Hello everybody!
WWD: Take us behind the process of producing the new LP. When did you first decided to start constructing the release?
It started with the track ‘Blue Hour’ working title for that was Montepellier and I did it after my 5 years relationship was over 4 years ago. I never took time out to do the whole album, I made EP’s and some tracks in between I wanted to put on my album, thats why it took so long.
WWD: What was the biggest influence to start work on the LP?
When I listened to The Last Resort from Trentemoeller, I was sure that I also wanted to make an album, but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.
WWD: Going into the studio, what were you hoping to achieve with the productions?
A lot of my ideas were born on my travels, mostly in New Zealand and Australia, and then finished in my studio in berlin.
WWD: An LP can be an arduous, stressful process. What did you do to relax when you weren’t in the studio?
The best thing for me to stop thinking and start relaxing is doing yoga and meditation, this is the best method to get rid of your control freak in your head.
WWD: Can you tell us about some of the key production tools behind the album?
Ableton, logic and a few vintage synthesizers.
WWD: What did you enjoy most while producing the tracks?
It was recording with the different msuicians to fill the gaps with organic sounds, making it sound warmer. Also, the mixing process, recording some sounds on tape and putting it back into the mix.
WWD: The album is available on vinyl also. We know you’re a big vinyl lover. Do you have a favourite record of all time?
I have a few i guess 😉 but definitely ‘The Chronic’ from Dr.Dre is one of my favourite of all time.
WWD: In your eyes, what albums in the electronic domain stand out for you as ideal examples of quality LPs?
The Last Resort from Trentemoeller and Kruder & Dorfmeister’s Dj-Kicks are pretty outstanding.
WWD: Now that the production side of things is all sewn up. What does the rest of the year have in store for Nico Stojan?
I am doing my album tour, playing a few gigs here and there and will start our new label with Acid Pauli beginning of next year.
Nico Stojan’s debut LP ‘Twisted Manners’ is available on vinyl now.
