This week, Berlin-based producer and Flash Recordings chief Florian Meindl looks back on the release of his latest LP Collide, discussing the impact of the record, detailing the impressive new remix pack and shining a light on both his personal plans (including his work in the Modular Synth world) and the future of his imprint. What’s more, the label boss and esteemed producer shares an exclusive premiere from the remix pack. Check out the Electric Rescue remix of “Solitaire” below!
WWD: Thanks for joining us Florian! Where are you right now and what has been on the to-do list this week?
Hey guys, thanks for having me! I’m in Berlin where I live and this week a was super-busy one, almost manic, because I got new equipment and I’m exploring it and producing new tracks with it! By experimenting with new techniques especially in the Modular System world very interesting spontaneous things can happen, one new module can transport everything into a new dimesion – it can bring new impulses into the artistic workflow!
WWD: The remix pack for the LP is fire, how did you go about selecting the remixers?
The selection of the remixers was naturally by choosing the producers around me who also release on FLASH Recordings, I appreciate their work and was interested in what they could do with my tracks and the result is top notch! The moment where you listen to a good remix for the first time is very special to me as a producer because they did something with your initial material and you are very sensitive to that as the original creator and if the result is good and interesting it’s a very pleasant feeling!
WWD: Looking back on the LP release, were you happy with the impact of the album?
Yes I’m happy with it, more pleased than with my first album but I’m looking forward to my next one already which is not planned yet but I have got so many unreleased tracks and sketches they will lead into an album soon I think!
WWD: On the FLASH Recordings front, what does the next few months hold?
We are packed until April 2016 with a release every two weeks we get so many demos that’s great but of course also a lot of chaos and work, I signed Ejeca, Submerge, Diego, Alexander Kowalski, Vinz Exe, Avgusto, Forest People, Responder, P-Ben, Monolith, Ricardo Garduno, Heron, STRISC., Paco Marcelo, Hobi & Unravel! Yes and of course a new EP I’m working on right now!
WWD: Are you still learning as a label head?
Yes sure! Some things though repeat of course, but there are loads of experiences to make and learn from, good and bad, sometimes also expensive ones đ
WWD: You’ve also set your targets on the modular synth world. How have things progressed with Riemann Modular since we last talked?
The progress was a little bit slower than planned but we have all parts for the prototype which will be pitched to the distributor soon! I cannot tell more about it right now as we want to keep it secret until everything is finalized! Just follow Riemann Modular on Facebook if you are interested! But I can tell one thing, we plan to do all modules in stereo if possible!
WWD: You debuted a new hybrid LIVE show this past Summer, what did that consist of?
It consisted of y mobile modular rack with 4 rows of modules, the TanzbĂ€r which his a full analog drum machine hybrid sounding similar to an 808, some little fx boxes and MASCHINE as a sampler – it was a great experience and luckily the crowd was into it too – to make this transportable for airplanes I need to reduce the gear though – what I will do is preparing a mobile version of the live act and offer the show maybe mid or end of 2016 in addition to my DJ gigs – maybe it will be a very improvised show where many different surprising things can happen musically but always in a Techno context with strong punchy kick drums!
WWD: Can we expect more new music from you before the close of 2015?
Before the close of the year only a track on the new TipTop Audio Vinyl sampler but 2016 will be quite full of releases if I continue producing like I did the last weeks! I will present a slightly new sound which is rougher and a bit wilder than in the past maybe! I start to like saturated sounds more and more but let’s see where this analog love leads to!
