Having traversed the realms of house, techno and funk, Jordon Saxton has managed to catch the attention that most would dream of. From stomping techno cuts on Resin and No Logo, to groove filled vibes on Big Doint and quirky house on Church, Saxton has firmly planted himself at the heart of club music. Alongside the premiere of ‘Unpressed’, a track of his taken from his forthcoming EP on Shall No Fade, we caught up with the young Leeds based producer to talk manga, his tips for 2016 and the future of his Hokkaido Dance Club imprint.
You and Don Found launched your Hokkaido Dance Club imprint last year, inaugurating it with ‘Temptation’ under your Viers moniker. What plans have you for the label and who should we be expecting to make an appearance on it this year?
Yeah, we have Mall Grab stepping up for the next one which I’m really excited for. Going to try get some more out this year but also take it as it comes, don’t want to rush it with tunes I don’t truly believe in.
Your music is quite varied, ranging from disco to house and straight up techno. I’m sure it all depends on the mood you’re in but what sort of set up and process do you have you when composing?
I make all my tunes sat on the sofa with some Shure headphones. I tend to get a lot of ideas for different styles and having the multiple aliases helps me manage to get all the tracks out without it being a jumbled mess under one name. I mean it would make no sense to have a LK track come out then next release a hard techno number under the same alias. In terms of general process there isn’t an awful lot to it, just a big bottle of Pepsi max and a lot of spare time.
The title of your debut LP ‘Freesia’ was named after Jiro Matusmoto’s manga novel of the same name. Are you a manga/anime fan and, if so, is there anything you could recommend?
Yeah it all depends what people are into, theres a lot of western focused anime like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo which are great but my fave series of the past few years was probably Shinsekai Yori. Other honorable mentions are K-On (where I got the LK EP name from), Serial Experiments Lain, the Monogatari Series, Shirobako, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. Manga wise check out Oyasumi Pun Pun, One Punch Man, Homunculus, Eden and Freesia.
You’ve bigged up the likes of Mall Grab and Aquarium who have broken through over the past year. Have you any tips for producers you think will crack it in 2016?
Yeah man everyone should look out for this guy called X-Coast, he’s really good. Also Ross From Friends, Rudolf C, Sinfol and Scott Young aka Satin Doll has some cool releases coming up.
You’ve played quite a lot at Corsica Studios with the Church crew. It it your favorite place to play? Where would you like to play most that you haven’t already?
Yeah man I love it there, been a little while would love to go back sometime this year. Love to throw down a set at Cosmic Slop, Absolutely legendary night in Leeds.
You’ve got quite a broad range of musical interests it would seem. What have you got your ears wrapped around at the moment?
Been listening to a lot of Especia at the moment. They are like this city-pop group from Japan with all this weird vaporwave aesthetic, sound very 80s disco. Check out “Aviator” it’s their most recent single if you’re into that kinda thing.
You’re based in Leeds as far as I’m aware. For someone who hasn’t been before, what tips would you give for those heading there for a weekend?
Pick a Saturday when Cosmic Slop is on. Then just chill in Hope House listening to hot jams till late Sunday morning.
You’re upcoming release ‘Keion’ as LK on Shall Not Fade is set for release this month. Is there a story behind the release, how you made it or what inspired you?
Lesa Known was the first track I made under the LK name about 2 and a bit years ago. Found this killer Lee Konitz sample from one of his early tracks with Miles Davis and from there went on to make Valentino from the Ruff Draft EP and Unpressed in about 2 days. The most recent track is Oh ‘U Sexy Thang’, which was inspired by a lot of D’angelo which I was spinning a lot at the time.
What’s next for you in 2016?
Few LK tracks coming out on various labels. Got the next Naked Naked locked down, and got a Viers release coming in March-ish on Figure.
