The latest edition in our Stories Behind The Sound series takes us to meet Spanish artist Javier Orduña. In addition to releases on the likes of Moda Black and Guy Gerber’s Rumours imprint, Orduna also manages budding label Nightcolours with partner Chris Forshaw. This week, along with showcases an exclusive track from the label’s upcoming release, indeed a record from Orduna himself, he’s talked us through the vision driving the imprint, their upcoming project and how being a label boss has impacted on his own career.
WWD: Hi Javier, Thanks for taking the time to have a talk with us. What have you been getting up to this week?
Hi, first of all thanks for the interview! This week I have been working on a remix for Atapy that will be released on Chapter 24, also finishing the remix for KRBO a new artist that will release his first Ep in Nightcolours. I’ve also been making the last mixdowns of my upcoming Ep at Jeudi Records, and working on my album.
WWD: Talk us through the new release on Nightcolours! Is there a tale behind it?
Yes, all the releases have a story, the one behind “the bird hat” was three different feelings and situations that I was living in the moment I was working on that tracks, “The Bird Hat” It’s funny and at the same time surreal, like life can be sometimes, the track call “Si puedo” means in Spanish something like….”Yes, I can do it” It represents the hard work I do everyday in the studio to get my best with the music, and finally the track “Rotary Motion” It’s a story about life cycles that repeat in a similar way to the loops of techno.
WWD: In your eyes, how has Nightcolours developed since you launched the label?
In a lot of ways, the most important is how we are getting involved to attract a new audience to the label, and also how we make relationships with other artists to consolidate the label. My partner at the label, Chris Forshaw is taking the most important parts of the job, so Im the one that is learning a lot of things and I see how people and artist are getting involved every day in the label with his support.
WWD: With so many new labels being created these days. What do you feel your label offers that others lack?
The most important thing is the personal care we take with all the artist involved, also a special “taste” in what we release, artists can see that Nightcolours is really personal imprint, not concerned with fashions and releasing music that can be played in different moments of a Dj set, but with a special “soul” on it.
WWD: Do you find yourself spending more time involved with the label rather than producing or do both work seamlessly around each other?
I spend much more time with the production, I work every day like 10 hours in the studio, and with the label I help Chris in listening and taking the last decisions of new demos and also looking for new remixers, but managing a label means a lot of work and the bigger part is done by Chris but we speak all the time on Skype, because most days Im working on new releases & remixes.
WWD: What do you do when you need a break from it all?
Good question…some time ago I needed that break and I didnt take it, so things became really hard and I got frustrated, so I learned that when I need a break I just take it, I go to play tennis and I go with my bicycle. Everyday I’m trying to get more of a balance in my life between studio time, family and leisure.
WWD: Has running a label changed the way you approach your own releases?
Yes, recently I’ve spent a lot of time analyzing my career and talking about future plans with Chris, how I want to get my music out, on what labels and how to do this. The big problem for all artists is trying to make a living from this life and you have to be super professional to ensure that you can make a living doing something you love.
WWD: What else have you guys got lined up this year?
We have my EP up next which is out on May 9th. Then we have music coming from Adam Stacks, Beatamines, Thomas A.S. Argenis Brito, Bumppo, Garance, LE:ON, another EP from Luminer and a few more things that I can’t say too much about right now.
WWD: Looking to the summer, what would make it a success for you?
I have my EP’s on Jeudi & Nightcolours to be released and also I have a split EP with Chaim still to come so seeing them do well would be great. Also hopefully to return to Ibiza where last year I played at Space and for Guy Gerber’s RUMORS party.
WWD: Before we say goodbye, what are the important dates coming up on your calendar?
The Sonar party with my buddy Alexi Delano, La Terrrazza Club, and also the party with my city town friends at 404 Club.
