Ahead of the ADID return to Berlin on August 21st, the When We Dip team caught up with some integral members of Lee Burridge and Matthew Dekay’s quirky musical family. Going back to back with Lost Desert and UK duo Death On The Balcony, we got the lowdown on their involvement with the imprint and their on-going shenanigans. It’s all below 😉
More info: All Day I Dream // Berlin Summer Series: Part Two at Else [August 21st, 2016]
WWD: Thanks for taking the time to chat guys! How are you?
Death On The Balcony: We are very good thank you! Just returned & replenishing ourselves after a gig in Ibiza for Open lab at Heart. It was a great party which lead to an extended stay over there It’s never easy leaving that island!
WWD: Tell us about your first memories of coming into contact with All Day I Dream and its music!
Lost Desert: About a year ago, Lee Burridge came to play at a party called Edge in Antwerp, where I am one of the resident DJs. We clicked and kept in touch and so the collaboration started. I discovered the label through “Fur Die Liebe” by Matthew Dekay and Lee a couple of years before that. I really fell in love with the label through “Farewell at the gates of dawn’ by Maher Daniel & Gabe Rhome which is one of the tracks I played the most.
WWD: The ADID gatherings are very communal, friendly affairs. Is there a particular set of characteristic prevalent in the crew, founders and residents, that makes for such a warm vibe?
DOTB: There is definitely a special atmosphere at these parties, where you will see people from all walks of life and age groups yet with an understanding, energy and passion for the styles of music and ethos to be heard and felt at All Day I Dream events. Smiles on faces, welcoming people and most definitely party people & we love that demographic! This radiates from the crew & artists as a two-way thing. You could look at anyone from people behind the scenes to people actually creating the wonderful set design at the parties and they are all doing great things but very humble and friendly with it. Everyone is taking their craft seriously but never forgetting to enjoy it. After all, it is a party!
WWD: Can you give 5 words to describe the philosophy behind the imprint in your eyes?
LD: Daytime, dreams, patience, love and melody
WWD: Among the residents, who for you has the most awe-inspiring skills behind the decks?
DOTB: We have met most but we are still to meet the final few of the ADID artists, most of which we will meet at some point in the next few weeks. There is no easy way to answer this question. Everyone has their own unique style that they bring to All Day I Dream and their performance, which is why they are on board for the journey! To answer the question though we would say Powel. He has an amazing skill of losing his shoes behind the decks (or at least he did in Ibiza)
WWD: Who would you say is the best cook?
Lost Desert: I can’t tell you who is the best because they all cook different dishes, and I have not tasted them all just yet! However the best chef in general is Nick Bril of The Jane in Antwerp…
WWD: The biggest joker?
DOTB: We have had some funny moments with Lee & Matthew on our travels so far. We personally try not to take ourselves too seriously as people, we love a good giggle & are quite tongue in cheek by nature; we feel it’s important to have fun with what we do beyond the music. I think they are both from the same school of nonsense. Have they made a ‘Carry On Dreaming’ movie yet? HA
WWD: When you’re not playing shows, what are you usually doing?
Lost Desert: Writing & producing music at my home studio and being the best cook possible for my family
WWD: How would you describe the role Lee & Matthew play in the development of the label’s artists?
DOTB: Integral. Inspirational. It is hard to emphasise enough the importance to us of finding a family to work with who respect our work & style and the feeling is wholly mutual. It feels like home. We feel fortunate to have found great people & artists who, like us, work in a consistent, creative, professional & social way & are also humble with their ongoing success! There are many artists on the label who are starting on their journeys in this family together and really coming into their own. The drive of Lee, Matthew & the rest of the ADID team is a huge positive motivation on us and surely all the other artists equally!
WWD: Aside from spinning tunes on August 21st, what else is on your to-do list for Berlin?
Lost Desert: I think I might visit Watergate and during the day I will be strolling around the city and go wherever the flow takes me, which is never hard to do in Berlin.
WWD: Before we say goodbye, tell us what else have you got coming up over the next few months?
DOTB: We’ll be in Ibiza for Space (20th) & to Berlin (21st) for the second of the summer series of parties for All Day I Dream at Else. We have just had our “Lighten Your Horizons” EP out on San Francisco label ‘Das Sind Wir’. In September we will head back to the states for some dates including a Das Sind Wir Showcase with Powel & Trev Campbell. We are also very excited for the release of our debut 4 track EP for All Day I Dream called “Rivers, Tides, Miles & Memories” this has 3 original Death on the Balcony tracks on & Marks debut solo track under his name ‘Caramelli’ this will come out for the end of summer in the first week of October. This has been waiting in the pipeline for a while so it’s going to be great to see it out there for the dancers, dreamers & djs! Seems some of the tracks off it have gathered quite a following before it has even been released, which is great to hear & see!
Other than that we will be pursuing some side projects, solo projects & collaborations all under the Death on the Balcony umbrella (or should we say parasol!). We are excited for the coming months and whatever tales of vice & virtue they may bring! Ongoing as ever & always excited for what the future may bring…
