Amsterdam-based artists Cubicolor debut their very first album ‘Brainsugar‘ on Anjunadeep, September 16th. The LP, which features the likes of ‘Falling‘, ‘Mirror Play’ and brand new song ‘Dead End Thrills‘, sees frequent collaborator and former Duologue front-man Tim Digby-Bell join Peter Kriek and Ariana Olierook as a fully fledged member of the project. Ahead of the album release, we’re very excited to welcome the guys on board for what is the sixty ninth edition of our central mix and interview series. In addition to providing an exclusive recording for the When We Dip family, Peter fronted up to our most pressing questions on the album process and their future plans…
WWD: Thanks for taking the time to chat guys. Congrats on the album! Have you had a chance to celebrate its completion yet?
P- Not really, the album itself is hopefully the celebration. Making this album was more like a marathon than a sprint.
At the finish line we were tired but very content that we completed it.
WWD: There’s a real human feel to the record. Going into the studio, what were you hoping to achieve with the productions?
P- We wanted to focus more on songs and use electronic music as a base. We didn’t want to restrict ourselves to any particular genre,
just go with the flow and if it felt good we kept it. This album is all about taking some risks, trying to go to new places instead of following
the current musical dogma. We’re proud of this album and of what it represents both musically and lyrically.
WWD: Can you tell us about some of the key sections or elements from the album which took the most effort on your part?
P- The whole album took quite a bit of effort. We worked on every track trying to maximize it. For instance the track ‘Falling’ started out as an instrumental. Then Tim sang an amazing chorusline on it and we had a version of it that was already cool. But we still felt we could get more out of it so we decided to try to add verses to it. When we wrote and recorded those and added the appropriate production we ended up with the finished track. Pretty much every track on the album has a similar journey
WWD: Anjunadeep has provided a great base for you guys in recent times. Did you bring the album idea to them or was it something suggested on their end?
P- It’s a collaborative effort. We try to operate as much as possible as a team where each cog in the wheel plays a necessary and relevant part.
This is not a typical album you would expect on Anjunadeep. We’re happy they support it and believe in it.
WWD: Were there any albums in the electronic domain that stood out for you beforehand as ideal examples of quality LPs?
P- Between the 3 of us we appreciate a diverse range of music in different styles. But within the electronic domain we love artists like:
Four Tet, Modeselektor, Steve Reich, Plaid, Orbital, the Orb, Massive Attack, Prefuse 73, Amon Tobin etc.
WWD: Now that the production side of things is all sewn up. What does the rest of the year have in store?
P- Preparing our live show, writing new songs for Cubicolor. Aad is currently touring the US supporting the album. We’ll see where the musical tide carries us!
