Montreal-based producer Prince Club pulls an impressive new collaboration out of the bag this September as he combines with highly talented Irish musician Ryan O’Shaughnessy. The unlikely duo have come together for what is an engrossing cross-genre collaboration. In addition to sharing an exclusive from the two track release (which drops September 12th on Ghost Club Records), we posed the Canadian artist a series of questions around the production of the release, while also getting the lowdown on recent endeavours and the development of GCR.
WWD: Thanks for taking the time to chat Max! What’s new in Montreal?
Hi Guys ! Thank you so much for having me ! It’s summer here in Montreal so there’s alot going on & were approaching the end of the summer so people are tryin to get the last summer activities in.
WWD: You’ve combined with Irish musician Ryan O’Shaughnessy on a killer new two tracker. Certainly surprised pairing together, you come from quite different spaces along the musical spectrum. Was that something that intrigued you?
Whats funny is that Ryan is in no way unfamiliar to the Dance Music scene. He’s got a pretty good grasp on what’s going on in the clubs & festivals and when you work with a singer who already has a sense of whats up in that scene its so much easier to connect and share ideas.
WWD: How did you guys connect exactly?
I think Ryan was in Canada touring and ULTRA had our managers get us in contact. I was suppose to work on an arrangement for a song of his and we just kinda hit it off!!
WWD: Did you put the tracks together in person or was it an interweb collaboration?
We made those 2 songs (and more) in 3 days at my studio in Montreal when Ryan was in Canada. Its honestly my favorite way to work with singers. there’s something human about debating vocal takes or the way the beat comes in over the vocal melody. Sometimes you work with someone over the interweb and it’s very difficult to explain what you want from the vocalist let alone represent an emotion! Ryan’s voice is so good its almost unreal when he sings in front of you & his pen game is super strong so it really was great to be able to sit down together and write songs that meant something to us.
WWD: Did you have in mind a particular type of track before you started working on it or was it more go with the flow?
Actually we had made a more “disclosure” ish track at first and that kinda broke the ice and then we just worked like maniacs for 2 days after that because Ryan was heading back to Europe. We made something like 5 tracks in 3 days. Ryan is incredible with writing and finding melodies we experimented the most we could during our time together but also tried to yield the most work out of it.
WWD: The release is forthcoming on your own label. Can you tell us a bit about the imprint and your focus with it?
Ghost Club started as a production company that I was doing on the side to produce other genres of music & develop local artists that i thought were talented. I had teamed Up with a Homie of mine that was helping me find new artists and bring in business when one day he said “you know you’re gonna have to turn this shit into a label because you’d be dumb not to release these super great people you are producing” And it kinda snowballed…Now we have a great roaster of of different genres. I guess that really became our focus, not to be a genre driven label. A lot of labels are pigeon-holed into one genre or one sound, specially in the electronic music world.
WWD: You’ve experimented and developed your sound over the last few years. In your eyes, what’s inspiring your productions right now?
Ive always been a studio guy. Always made tons of different styles of music and thats really what keeps me going. Now being signed to ULTRA I have the opportunity to be in contact with so many talented people I don’t have a choice but to be on top of my producing game and the thing with producing is you are never not learning something new. Thats how I stay inspired really…by staying curious. Im also blessed with this crew of friends who are all super talented at doing music so were always trying to one up each other.
WWD: Any other excited plans you can tell us about?
There’s so much going on i don’t even know where to start ! We have some KILLER releases coming this fall. Im going back to Los Angeles pretty soon to work on some stuff for a couple big names. Had the chance to work on DJ Snake’s album that just came out that was pretty insane. I finished a couple albums for some of my artists. Just alot of music related stuff hahaha.
WWD: Music wise, what else have you got coming up over the next few months?
I produced this insanely talented rapper called “GrandBuda” we just finished his album & that’s coming out on GCR also i work with this super talented 20 year old girl called “Aaricia” we just finished her album as well. We have 2 other super talented rappers that are finishing their mixtapes (Rico Watts & St-Alpha) and some great house releases lined up. It never really stops.
Thanks so much for having me guys ! And hope you enjoy My new Ep with Ryan O’Shaughnessy.
