Self-confessed vinyl addicted Mihalis Safras takes the time from his non-stop schedule to show When We Dip through his record collection. The Greek producer, and owner of the Material & Mr. Carter imprints, has been a wax lover for decades and we couldn’t resist getting his input on all things vinyl…
WWD: People probably often ask you what’s the first record you bought but we’d like to know what was the record that made you think that all of this could be more than just a hobby?
Well my first record was bought in 1987 but it was in 1991 when I got the wax of Charly by Prodigy I said to myself.. Hereeeee we are!
WWD: Your top record stores?
Just one: www.deejay.de and for those who know that they can order their own vinyl cut then go for Vinyl Carvers!
WWD: When you make a trip to dig records, where do you tend to start?
Its always about the breakbeat when I start cause this reminds me of my childhood. SO the good old XL Recordings and Suburban base and Metalheadz!
Good old eras that later came to House!
WWD: What does playing only on vinyl represent in your eyes?
Its not only that vinyl jockeying represents something, it’s about a statement that vinyl is here like the good old days. I am a bit emotional with that stuff since i’m a wax lover .. if only wax were females haha!
WWD: What sort of impact does that have an logistics for a traveling artists?
Good question here cause it truly is a pain in the ass… Paying the costs of the bag is nothing but when it comes to carrying the 30kilo bag and even worse when it comes to sometimes loosing the bag then you know… You can become a boxer fighting machine! The McGregor of vinyl! But again when you go to venue with your 12inches you fogret all about it….
WWD: What’s the one most important tip you have for anyone learning to play on vinyl?
Clean you wax well! #needlesjump
WWD: Who’s the tightest vinyl playing artist you’ve seen in recent memory?
Ben Sims back in the day… playing 4 decks at 139 bpm
WWD: What were your three favourite non-dance music vinyls in the past few months?
Hmm hard call as some good pieces came lately..
Cats Eyes – Drag is a lovely tune
And off course Trentemoller – River in me…. (soon to be on wax)
WWD: Can you give us your two biggest dance-floor records right now?
One is Recycled Loops from 1999 (catalog recycledloops002) still fresh!
Second would be my own cut on Marco Carola – Play It Loud (Mihalis Safras remix)
WWD: Before we let you go, what have you got music-wise coming up over the next few months?
Well lately I love working with the legends that Green Velvet and Lee Foss is.. remixed something from him and releasing on his labels so stay tuned!
