The When We Dip fam are honoured to welcome Suol Music and Defected Records producer Larse on board for the 72nd edition of the WWD podcast. In addition to supplying an exclusive new tape, the German producer ran us through all things new and old, delving into the “On Canvas” concept, his love of Borussia Dortmund and lots more.
WWD: Thanks for stopping by to chat!
my pleasure!
WWD: How are you doing? What’s been on your to-do list this week?
It’s the week of the release of my ‘On Canvas Pt.2’ EP on Suol, so there are some interviews, promo and stuff. I also work on a new tune, together with my man from L.A., Charlie Sputnik, who sent me some amazing vocals for an upcoming track. I hope to finish the track in the next weeks, there’s still some work to do on that.
WWD: You’re back releasing on Suol this October. Can you share something we might not know about the Suol crew?
As you might know, they have several studios in the same building in Berlin and in that building they do have a ping pong table as well. I asked them many times to challenge, but I guess they’re afraid of gettin’ beaten by the Dortmund man! 🙂
WWD: Can you tell us about the “On Canvas” concept? What was your thinking around the two part release?
The ‘On Canvas Pt. 1’ EP was the first EP after maybe 2 years. I released some single tunes on Suol, like OneandOne, Honey & City, the latter ones on the SUOL Summer Daze compilations, but the first EP was pretty special for me. I decided to split it in 2 parts, to give people a glipmse of what they can expect in the future. All tracks are really different, they maybe have the same kind of vibe, but production-wise, they all have a different approach. The name ‘On Canvas’ should mark out that after a long time of doing demos and skits, it’s time for a finished product/track, so I chose ‘On Canvas’ to compare it to a painter, who now finishes his painting and shows it to the audience.
WWD: Has the past Summer seen much studio work or has the weather been too nice?
I spent some time in the studio, here in Dortmund and in Berlin to record the vocals with HRSSN for ‘In & Out’ which you can hear on Part 2. Despite that we had some great open air parties with the SUOL Crew in Barcelona, Berlin and some festivals in Germany. But I also had some time to spend with the family, so it was a little bit of everything and all in all a great summer!
WWD: You’ve mentioned in the past the likes of Paradise Garage, Danceteria & Studio54 as influences in your music. How do you go about respecting the past while also assuring that you bring something new to the table in your sound?
For me the vibe is most important. It’s not the production or the use of a particular synth, I try to transport that vibe or feeling, that’s all. If you listen to artists like Fatima Yamaha or Palms Trax for example, its hard to predict the year they made their music. I think they are sounding timeless! That’s what I really like.
WWD: We know your a Borussia Dortmund fan. Do you get to see as many games as you’d like?
Oh yes! I still have my season ticket and try to watch as many games as possible. I’ve been to Colombia last week and watched the game during the night on my Macbook. I had a wake up call just for the game, due to the time difference in South America. As I’m doing this interview, today it’s Champions League against Real Madrid, so I’m getting a little bit nervous, while writing this…. You see, it’s hopeless, I’m a heavy supporter!
WWD: Aside from football and music of course, have you got any other big passions right now?
I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends. The last few weeks I tried to improve my golf a little bit. I used to play it a lot in the past but had a break for the last 3 years. It’s a lot of fun and I really need more time to go out and play.
WWD: What else have you got coming up for the rest of 2016?
There’s a remix I did for Phonique, which will be out later this year I guess. I’ve also been working on some new tunes, one is featuring Charlie Sputnik, with whom I’ve made “The Sun” and “So Many Of Us” on Tensnake’s label TRUE ROMANCE, as I mentioned. But for now I’m really curious about the release of ‘On Canvas Pt. 2‘!
