Maximono is back on Dirtybird with a brand new release titled ‘Non Sense EP’ as well as a tour to celebrate. The tour will include stops across North America in Phoenix, Portland, Dallas, Austin, Detroit, Edmonton, Seattle, Chicago, and still more to be announced. The European duo has seen a ton of success as they had cut their teeth in the Drum & Bass scene. It wasn’t until they heard a few Dirtybird tracks that they actually decided to make the leap into House music though. So in commemoration of their big switch over to four on the floor grooves, we asked Maximono to share some of their favorite Dirtybird tracks with us.
1. The Martin Brothers – Stoopit
Probably the first dirtybird track we ever heard, back when we hadn’t even produced a house record or DJ’d ourselves. We were both still doing drum&bass under our aliases Loadstar, Triad and Madmen&Poets at the time but a few years after it came out, someone played it to us and we though it was super fresh and different. Even though we hadn’t started the Maximono project at the time it kind of influenced us and lead us into the world of slower BPMs.
2. Catz’n Dogz – Jon Bovi
This is one of the tracks that brought Dirtybird to us without being familiar with the label. We started listening to house music again around 2011 and Catz’n Dogz were one of the first acts we checked out regularly and followed their output closely. We love the overall atmosphere and harmonies in Jon Bovi and we still play it out… it’s just a great timeless piece of music.
3. Justin Martin & Ardalan – Mr.Spock
Another one of those early releases that brought us closer to Dirtybird. We love the blend of house, funk, breakbeat and hip hop and this track was representing that blend better than any other track at the time. Catchy as hell but still super cool and underground. A combination that you can hardly find at any other label.
4. Shadow Child – String Thing
This became an anthem at our own resident nights in Hannover Germany called “This Ain’t Bristol” way before we even planned to start an own label from this. It’s exactly the vibe we wanted to play to people and they really appreciated that we took the risk going away from the typical german house and techno sound bringing some fun, smiling and jumping back to the club. It’s pretty unreal how the whole thing developed and that we were able to book Shadow Child to play one of our nights.
5. Claude vonStroke – Turbosteppa
Besides “String Thing” this is probably the most ever played track at our „This Ain’t Bristol“ nights. It has everything a good house track needs for us: Funk, Nasty Bass and just the right amount of weirdness. It’s kinda stupid and fun, which is a good way to sum up the DB sound!
6. Justin Martin – Ruff Stuff
The peak time track in the first ever house sets we played. It’s one of those ones where you are always looking forward to drop. I’d say this track was behind the main motivation for starting to produce at 123bpm instead of 170. Also „Ghettos & Gardens“ for us is still one of the best electronic music albums ever released. Justin’s productions are full of emotions and harmonies and always get the crowd going. He’s also one of the coolest people we’ve ever met in the scene.
7. DJ Funk & Will Clarke – Booty Percolatin’
A track that nails the dirtybird vibe for us: fun vocals and sounds, funky tech vibes that sounds massive on any system. It stands out it in every set you play and everyone knows it. Will Clarke is the perfect proof that you can be Techno a.f. without taking it too seriously.
8. Get Real – Mind Yo Business
It’s one of those typical universal Dirtybird weapons which works in any situation whether you’re in a club, driving your car, having a bbq with your friends or making a cake with your nan. As we’re both 80s kids we’re in love with the vibe of this track.
9. Maximono – Don’t Give A Fuck Style
We normally wouldn’t pick one of our own tracks but this is the track that brought us to Dirtybird! We used to share our London studio with a producer called Pedestrian who was in touch with Ardalan and played him some of our music. That’s how the story began and after Justin Martin dropped it at Campout 2015 we were taken on board. So this will always be a very special track for us. “Don’t Give A Fuck Style” as a claim simply sums up DIrtybird quite nicely we think!
