Marquis Hawkes – Raw Materials

Marquis Hawkes is set to return to Houndstooth for his next release. The EP, which is due out next month, will see him follow up the impressive ‘Fifty Fathoms Deep’ EP, also released on Houndstooth last September. Compared to his last appearance on the imprint, it would appear that the Berlin based producer has gone in a slightly different direction with this latest offering.

The return to Houndstooth is a 3 track EP entitled ‘Raw Materials’, which may also be a hint of what is inside. For this record the influences have been listed as the likes of Ron Hardy and Roy Davis Jr.

The title track on the EP ‘Raw Materials’ is a lot more stripped back than compared with his releases in the more recent past such as Fat Man, but this drum machine heavy track is a warm, almost soft, introduction compared to what’s waiting on the other side of the record.

On the flip side of the record ‘Ave That’ is presented to us and it is a beautiful combination of sharp vocal cuts and 808 beats, containing an almost back to basics kind of feel. The track has a sort of retro 80’s feel through which the inspirational artists are being channelled. But rest assured – all tracks on this record have been designed specifically with the dancefloor in mind.

The third and final track, ‘Jerk U Later’, keeps in with the overall 80’s Chicago house vibe of the record and is a strong finisher for the EP. This is a record that has been designed with low ceilinged, high energy clubs in mind. With the kind of tracks that can hit you to your very core.
