Belfast’s Peter Gibney is on hand to mix the latest episode of the Select Cuts series. The Soundspace Records co-owner talks us through the launch of the young UK imprint, some of his favourite city hang-outs and his personal rise as an artist. Hit that play button and make the introduction below!
WWD: Thanks for joining us Peter! Where are you right now and what has been on the schedule this week?
Hey, thanks for having me! I’m currently at home relaxing, nothing too exciting.
This week I’ve been kept fairly busy, I got started on a new remix for the label as well as some other projects. We’ve also been getting everything organised for our next release with Fion, which I’m really looking forward to.
WWD: Soundspace Records was launched recently. Tell us about the label, its ethos and your role there?
I’ve been really happy with the label since its launch, we’ve had some great releases and they all seem to be doing well. Our goal is to release the best forward thinking music around and not stick to a particular blueprint, if the music is good enough well sign it and that’s are thinking.
I spend a lot of time searching for new artists, people that we can help develop and build a relationship with, this is something that is very important to me and what labels should be doing more of.
WWD: How has Belfast received the project?
The support in Belfast has been great; I think because Kyle does a lot of press for club nights in and around the city amongst other things, this has helped toward building support locally for Soundspace in general. We’ve also got a few of the local lads to do remixes for us which is great. There’s so much talent coming from Belfast at the moment and we want to help showcase that.
WWD: For anyone new to the city, what are your three favourite hangouts in Belfast?
The Hudson bar and Aether and Echo are good spots. Good food, drink and a nice atmosphere. If you’re in and around Belfast while Twitch are holding a night in the students union that’s a must also.
WWD: How long have you been producing music? What is it you try to bring to the table through your productions?
I would say I’ve been producing seriously for about a year and a half now. I always made music before that but I really didn’t put much thought in to what I was doing, I would just open up Ableton and maybe play around for half an hour, but that’s about as far as it went.
There are certain things I look for in a track; I am often drawn to spacey atmospheres and something in there that’s slightly emotive. Although I do make a variety of different music, the last track I just got signed is very different than the others and I can’t wait to share it.
WWD: For now, is the plan to release solely via Soundspace?
A lot of my focus will be on Soundspace, but I will also be releasing on other labels in the near future. It’s important for me to reach out to as many people as I can, so releasing tracks on different platforms is essential.
WWD: Who are the people out there that are inspiring you, is there someone who you think epitomises what it means to be a good producer and DJ?
Some guys that have been really catching my eye with their productions and DJ sets lately would be Cliff Lothar and Danny Daze, some of their releases of late have been phenomenal and have definitely inspired me.
WWD: You’ve very kindly put a little mix together for us, can you tell us a bit about what one will find in there?
Loads of new stuff from producers and labels that I’m really enjoying and of course some new stuff from myself. I hope this will help people understand where I’m coming from musically after listening to the mix.
WWD: On a finishing note, what do the next few months hold for Peter Gibney as an artist?
Continuing to develop my sound and the label. I also hope to have some release dates finalised for some new tracks of mine.
