When it comes to melodic house and techno, one need not look further than Solomun’s Diynamic imprint. It’s a label which churns out quality and an integral part to said label is Magdalena.
Magdalena has been involved in the Diynamic affairs since the early days and having previously run Ego nightclub, Hamburg, it’s safe to say dance music runs through her veins. Taking to DJ’ing in recent years, she’s shown us all her prowess behind the decks and when we stopped by for a chat before the turn of the year, she hinted that a path of production may lie ahead.
Read on to find out more and listen to her delectable collection of Select Cuts she’s mixed for us.
WWD : Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Magdalena! Where are you in the world right now and what have you been up to this past week?
Magdalena : Right now I am in my home town Hamburg in Germany. Recently I have been to Ibiza, Istanbul, Slovenia and Dubai.
What was the last meal you ate and what’s your favourite food?
My last fantastic meal was in Dubai: Beetroot salad with Loup De Mer, with an entré of – pizza 🙂
The favourite dish always depends on my mood… I love fish and creative salads, but I guess my beloved pizza will always be a part of me.
You used to run the nightclub EGO for the label. What was the toughest thing you found about running the club?
The hardest part were the regular “office hours“ from Monday through Thursday. Then on the weekend you get in the club late, but also have to stay until 9 or 12 in the morning again. Until you’re done with the accounting and all, it can be up to 3 in the afternoon again.
Also, that you have to think of so many things simultaneously.
What is the funniest story you have to tell from your time running the club? Was there any weird moments you encountered?
There’s so many good memories and stories… almost too many. Carnival has always been a very special. And one story in particular that comes to mind: One time after finishing up I forgot that two friends of mine were still in the club and waited for me to finish, so I left and locked them inside the club. It took a while until they realized I was gone 🙂
You used to conduct interviews for EGO TV. If you had the chance to interview 1 person today (music related or not), who would it be and why?
That’s a very good question! I think that would have to be Sven Väth. He has seen so much, well, he’s in the business for a very long time so that kind of figures. I am sure he has quite the stories to tell 😉
When did you start spinning at the club?
2013
And when did you first start DJ’ing?
My first real gig was in August 2013 at Watergate in Berlin. After that, also in August, was Uebel & Gefährlich in Hamburg. And then the Rooftop Silken Diagonal Mobilee Closing Party together with Anja Schneider and Rodriguez Jr. in September of the same year.
How did your interest for DJing come about?
My hands autonomously started discovering the decks.
Can you tell us one musical influence you have from the past and one in the present?
The Clash, Blondie, Queen, Depeche Mode, R.E.M, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Eurythmics, Guns n´Roses, Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Groove, and many, many more!
Do you have any aspirations produce a little? If so, are you finding learning to produce difficult?
Yes, I am starting to get the groove 😉
What’s the best piece of production advice you’ve gotten and from who did you get it?
There’s not really one particular tip I have received.
What’s the best club you’ve ever played?
For me that is Pacha Ibiza.
If you were to play b2b with 1 dj at that club who would it be?
My very good friend Anja Schneider
What have been 3 of your favourite tracks to play in your 2015 sets? (Any order)
1 – Einmusik – Violet Whizzle
2 – Mauro Picotto – The Whistle
3 – Marcio Groove – The Meaning of Techno
What was your personal highlight of 2015?
The Diynamic take-over of Boiler Room Tulum in January 2015 for sure! The location and the venue were really special, almost like paradise. And at the end of the year the NYE party at Pacha, playing from 4:30 til 8! That was amazing.
One gig you’re looking forward to playing at in the near future?
Next stops are Milano and Scottland to which I really look forward.
Finally, I’m sure all the tracks in your mx for us are special, but is there 1 in particular we should listen out for?
Choosing only one would be unfair to the others… 😉
