After a successful string of releases with Wolf + Lamb, Mobilee, and Ministry of Sound in 2010, Jozif secured his spot as a staple producer in electronic music. The London producer’s musical range reaches beyond the constraints of typical dance musics as he swoons ears with his symphonic pads, melodic leads, and bold synth work—dipping into ambient grooves and sultry base lines. Besides his current affiliations with Crosstown Rebels, Culprit, Exploited, and Bedrock, he co-owns a label with Craig Richards called Fist or Finger and comprises one third of live electronic group Kerb Stellar. The man is vehement about his music as is shown through his ever refining body of work.

Now, Jozif is continuing forward with a jackin’ tech house EP, titled ‘Volcano’ for the California crew, Desert Hearts, which also features a knocking remix from label boss, Mikey Lion. We had a chance to chat with Jozif about his sound, projects and the recent release.

WWD: Congrats on your new EP with Desert Hearts, ‘Volcano.’ Could you tell us a little bit about what inspired the direction behind it?

It was actually quite simple on this one; just a collection of tunes that worked in different ways at the Festival.

WWD: You played a standout set at their festival this past year. What do you think helps make the Desert Hearts festival so special and separates it from other festivals?

I think it’s quite well documented that the guys and girls behind the festival are a special bunch who all share a common vision. It’s truly an amazing experience— certainly one that I’ve not had before!

WWD: You’re associated with some huge labels that are always pushing forward thinking music like Culprit, Exploited, and Leftroom. How did you get involved with those guys?

Think it’s like anything in this business – you meet people, you do shows with them, you hang out, you get on – you wanna do more stuff with them.

WWD: Let’s talk about your productions. Do you have a favorite hardware synth or VST that you’d like to put on blast?

I love my Dave Smith Evolver but she’s really temperamental.

WWD: What is your favorite track at the moment? And of your own work?

Mikey’s remix of my Desert Hearts tune, Volcano!

My remix of Joyce Muniz’ Daydreaming is a good one coz it took zero time to do it and works every time I play it 🙂

WWD: Tell us how you got involved with Matt Tolfrey and Duncan Jones to form Kerb Stallar.

Tolfrey and I have been good friends for a long time and when we started to share a studio space together we obviously them started to write stuff together. Kerb Staller never was really meant to be anything other us maybe putting out a record or 2 a year but as soon as we got Duncan in on some of he tracks we immediately knew we had ‘something’.

WWD: Not all of your tracks are dance floor oriented. What inspired you to make house music for unconventional settings?

Have no idea! I just write what’s in my head 🙂

WWD: You’ve been in the scene for quite some time now. If you could make a fortune cookie saying for upcoming producers, what would it read?

Become a dentist.
