London’s electronica duo Anaphase are an exciting fresh face that has joined John Monkman’s Beesemyer Music family recently. The pair debuted on the label with their intricate ‘Disconnect’ EP (also featuring a remix from Monkman) earlier in July and their second instalment on the imprint is soon arriving. The upcoming release will be accompanied by Anjunadeep’s Theo Kottis in a remix capacity. We caught up with Anaphase this week to make an introduction as they mixed the latest in our Prima Lux series!
WWD: Is there a specific meaning behind the name “Anaphase”?
Anaphase is the 4th stage of cell division in biology, read into that what you will.
WWD: What type of emotions will listeners feel when they ‘disconnect’ with your music?
Any emotion the listener might associate with darkness, light and escape.
WWD: How did the collaboration with the Beesemyer Music label come about?
We’ve been friends with John for a while and worked together over the last couple of years. John approached us recently about his new label and we were really into it, it seemed like the perfect place for us and it’s great to build a family that’s like minded and creatively on the same path.
WWD: Were there any specific inspirations behind the creation of ‘Anaphase’?
By chance we happened to have studios in the same building, loved the sound of what we were hearing as we passed by each others doors, and met and started collaborating that way, very natural. Musically we’re inspired by anything cinematic in soundscape contrasting darkness and light.
WWD: Can you give us a brief breakdown of your live set-up and why you have chosen to take the approach you have?
Vocals through TC Helicon Voice-Live for effects, and playing a Nord Piano and Juno 106.
Ableton is manipulating various stems controlled by Push sequencing various software and hardware like Arturia’s Microbrute, a TR8 etc
Live setups change all the time, this is the way we do it right now, we hope to experiment with live drums etc in the future and more gear of course.
WWD: What else can we expect from your gigs and music wise over the next few months?
We have a new release out on the 4th of August exclusively on Beatport which has two original tracks ‘Cortex’ and ‘Ornament’ and includes a great remix by Theo Kottis. We’re also looking forward to unveiling our new live show at the first Beesemyer Music label event later on this year.
