Stil vor Talent & Suah duo Mia Mendi are our guests on the latest instalment of Select Cuts. In addition to supplying a lethal new tape, we had the opportunity to sit down with the rising UK twosome and catch up. Tune into their exclusive mix below and dig into a little Q&A action!
WWD: Thanks for joining us guys, for those making on intro. How would you best describe your sound?
We’d say our sound is a melting-pot of different influences right now. Obviously with our latest release on Stil Vor Talent you can hear traditional Arabic and Spanish sounds – while the tracks we’ve just finished up though they’re still melodic are also pushing more of a dubby atmosphere.
WWD: As emerging artists, what do you find to be the biggest challenge in the industry?
It’s not making the music, not getting people to like the music but having people listen to it in the first place is by far the most arduous task. Thankfully we’ve been getting plays and downloads from a number of reputable artists over the past couple of months and we’re really grateful for the support.
WWD: What have you been listening to recently, be it tracks, artists, labels?
SOEL is a definite up and coming act, really enjoyed his track on Siamese ‘Oberon’ and he’s got more music forthcoming on Afterlife. We’ve recently rekindled a love with both Fur Coat and Hunter/Game who used to produce that new school deep house sound back in the day but lately moved into the melodic side of things. The Cercle live streams have made for great listening (Tale Of Us and Solomun in particular) as has Diynamic Outdoor on be-at.tv.
WWD: Where can we find you playing in the coming weeks and what have you got planned for the rest of 2018?
The biggest parties for us will be in Stockholm playing the rooftop for Slakthustaket on 13 July and we’re returning to Hannover on 28 July to headline the techno stage at SNNTG festival. Moving beyond that – gig-wise our first full French tour is in the works, we’ve got some dates in Tunisia lined-up and we’ll of course be returning to Deeper Effect in Southport. A follow-up collaboration with our good friend ASAS is due next on ‘Us & Them’ in August and after that we’ll be releasing with Rafael Cerato on our own label ‘Suah’. We’re also looking into setting up live streams in some stunning locations as well as working on a project with 1001tracklists.
