The latest edition in our Select Cuts series is in! For the occasion, we welcome on-board Solid Grooves maestro Michael Bibi. Not only has the tech supremo delivered an exclusive new tape, he kindly took the time to chat with the When We Dip team, touching on new music, Ibiza escapades and more. it’s all below!
WWD: First up, you just released your ‘Boomin’ EP on Leftwing & Kody’s Lost Records imprint, which has been a key track in your sets over the past few months. Can you tell us a little about how the track came about?
The track came about from an old 90’s sample we all used to listen to as kids. I was at a friends party and it came on recently and reminded me of how much I liked the vocal part, the shouted “Boom, boom, boom”, and how my mum used to shout at me when I was younger saying “all you listen to is this music that goes ‘Boom Boom Boom'”… I thought it was a fitting tribute.
WWD: This summer Solid Grooves returned to Ibiza’s Vista Club, which is located within the island’s famous establishment Privilege. As one of the first places you ever visited in Ibiza, did you ever think that you’d be returning there to play one day?
When I first started making music I never in a million years thought that I would be getting payed to do this, let alone playing in some of the biggest venues in the world. I feel extremely lucky today.
WWD: You’ve brought a huge list of big name guests with you, including the likes of Skream, Josh Butler, Richy Ahmed, Huxley, wAFF, Hector Couto and Guti to name just a few. What has been your favourite night so far and which are you looking forward to most?
Honestly, I love them all. Every night has something special!
WWD: Speaking of which, Solid Grooves will be heading back to Studio338 again in early August. What makes a hometown show in London so special to you and what can we expect?
I love playing in my hometown of London. Nothing beats coming back to where it all started and seeing all our friends, both old and new. The vibe at the London shows is something that honestly can’t be explained, you just have to be there!
WWD: Talk to us about the mix, what were you going for and do you feel that it reflects your current sets?
I just wanted to play a selection of tracks that I’m feeling right now, featuring some of my own tracks and some from friends. As always, keeping it groovy.
WWD: Lastly, we’ve read that you have a stack of unreleased productions waiting to drop over the coming months – where should we be looking out and are any featured in the mix?
Yeah there are a few in this mix, and yep, I’ve been crazy busy in the studio so I’m sitting on a lot of stuff that’s waiting to come out this year!
