Winter is here, and it’s time to embrace the cold sun. All Day I Dream has returned with A Winter Sampler — the Lee Burridge-led label’s annual homage to the season. Per usual, the compilation packs in a number of new and old label favorites into a diverse, yet cohesively ethereal record. Some of the Sampler’s artists this year include Amonita, Facundo Mohrr, Roy Rosenfeld, Newman, and Rowee.
Russian duo Modd make another strong contributor, closing the 13-piece record out on a blissful note with “Evening Fog.” The track takes you to a peaceful forest with bird calls, foggy synthwork, and cinematic strings to complement the natural sounds perfectly. Though it’s light and breezy number, “Evening Fog” ironically packs the emotion in heavy. It’s a standard we’ve come to know from Modd, and it’s why the duo is such a perfect fit into A Winter Sampler for its 2019 iteration. You can listen to the full premiere of the track while reading the cool interview we did with them.

WWD: Hi Modd, thank you for taking the time to speak with us! Where in the world are you at this moment, and what are you up to?
Hello, our pleasure! Recently got back from sunny Dubai to the freezing winter of Russia. We are in Volgograd now, working on new releases and getting prepared for the upcoming US tour.
WWD: How did you two meet and begin working together as a project, and how did you end up encountering Lee Burridge and starting a relationship with the ADID label/brand?
Stanislav: We both worked at a big night club (2500 capacity) in 2009, Vladimir was a light designer and I played as a resident there. And this is where we actually met. Our music tastes were so much alike and at the same time so much different from other residents that we got on well pretty quick.
Vladimir: It was then in 2009 that we first thought of creating something together – but it was only in 2015 that we launched our Modd project. We met Lee in 2018 during a showcase in Dubai and since then we keep in touch and made friends with the label’s team.
WWD: You’re known known for ethereal, melodic shades of deep house – a sound that rises out of Russia quite a lot. Can you tell us more about the scene there, and what draws people to this sound? What made you fall in love with deep, melodic stuff?
This music has its soul, it also reflects our mood and emotions we had when we were producing it and this is what probably makes the biggest difference compared to anything else. Harmony and melody are the things that would make anyone in this world fall in love with the music.
WWD: When it comes to your production, which synths, plugins, hardware, etc do you use most? Do you have a routine or set process in how you produce, such as writing a hook first, or tuning the low-end?
Nothing super extraordinary! See yourself: we use Ableton Push,Ableton 10, studio monitors Yamaha HS80, sound card Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII Quad, and ARTURIA KeyLab 49. We wouldn’t say we have a certain routine, it’s always different – sometimes we’d start with the rhythm, sometimes with the melody or an idea we have!
WWD: What drives and inspires your creativity?
We are truly inspired by the people who love what we do and send us touching emails (which we happen to receive quite often!) or get in touch through socials with their kind words. Some people say our music helps them to get trough difficult situations in life, other people enjoy listening to it when travelling the world – and we can’t be more happier about this!
WWD: Tell us about “Evening Fog.” The track has a lot of natural sounds in it, did you write it after an outdoor adventure?
Evening Fog is beautiful and pretty melancholic. It was recorded on a foggy day here in the south of Russia where we live. It’s foggy pretty often in here.
WWD: What are some things you hope to accomplish artistically in the coming years?
We want to bring our music to as many people as possible, to the farthest corners of our planet. We are thinking of recording an album. And of course, of getting a Grammy! 🙂
WWD: Finally, what’s coming up for Modd in 2019?
We are launching our own label Amulanga Records, so be prepared for many beautiful releases! We’ll be touring US, Australia, India and Europe. And will also work on an album!
