Fast forward, and her SHADOWS party is entering its next phase on the enchanting island of Ibiza. Impressive, humble yet daringly talented, we had a discussion with Magdalena via email about what is coming up for her, as well as her own party SHADOWS. Have a read below.
WWD: Congratulations on the news of your second Ibiza season with SHADOWS! Can you tell us a bit about the concept, lineups and venue this year?
M: Thank you! This year we changed the venue to Cova Santa but we have stayed with the concept of a free entry party. We expect more people, since the venue is bigger, and the hours are longer. We start outside at 17.00 and move to the club at midnight where we can play until sunrise. We invited three or four guests per event, a mixture of legends and upcoming artists, but all playing the kind of sound I love. I’m really excited.
WWD: How do you think it will differ from last year’s season at Blue Marlin, is there anything you decided you wanted to do differently, and other things you knew you definitely wanted to keep?
M: Well we definitely wanted to keep the brand name and concept as it worked well last year, and we also wanted to keep the outdoors element – I absolutely love playing outside at sunset. Otherwise, we just wanted to go even bigger.
WWD: You’ve also taken your SHADOWS residency on the road this year, with a special in Tulum and two mini-tours in Germany and Switzerland. How did these go? What did you learn from the experience?
M: I’m pleased to say they were both a success. Tulum was magical – we had a big lineup and a beautiful location – but the German and Swiss dates were great too: it was nice to go on the road with just one friend each time (Francesca Lombardo, and La Fleur). With every party you put on, you just learn more in general about what makes a great night.
WWD: What does it mean to you to have your own successful party brand, after so long playing other people’s and label parties? We know you still have a great relationship with Diynamic for example, but it must feel nice to be out of the “shadows” in a sense?
M: It feels amazing for sure, these parties have definitely been a career highlight for me. Every time I take to the decks at a SHADOWS party I have a bit of a “pinch me” moment. That said, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I was given by the likes of Diynamic at the start of my career – I consider those guys my family, so I am always happy to continue playing their label parties and release with them.
WWD: How does your background running EGO in Hamburg help you with organising your own Ibiza residency, if at all?
M: At EGO club I learned how to organise a hundred things at once, often on very little sleep. This definitely helps me today, as I think of every little detail and don’t cut corners no matter how tired I am.
WWD: Who are some of the newer artists on the SHADOWS 2019 lineup we should be keeping an eye out for?
M: Terr, Stereocalypse, Mathias Schober, Alex Metric.
WWD: When was your very first Ibiza gig and what happened?
M: Funnily enough, it was at Cova Santa, where I played for Diynamic Outdoor and everything went well – I was very excited and had lots of fun, and made new friends along the way. It feels amazing to play there again but heading up my own party – it’s like everything’s come full circle.
WWD: The party will run over the course of sunset – what is a quintessential Ibiza sunset record to you?
M: It’s impossible to just name one. Last year, it was my track ‘Mountains Of Es Cubells’ as I made it specifically for those kind of moments. I have a lot in my playlist, so stay tuned for what I’ll be pulling out of my hat.
WWD: Will you be playing any other parties in Ibiza this year?
M: Yes – let’s just say you might see me playing with my Diynamic friends at some point in the season 🙂
WWD: We imagine your Ibiza residency will be keeping you busy over summer, but are there any new Magdalena releases in the works?
M: Yes, my next release is out in May – it’s a remix of a contemporary classical track, Maia, by an artist called Burak coming out on Neue Meister. It was a really interesting challenge for me to remix something a bit different. I have a few more cool remixes out over the summer. I am really excited about all of my music and the most exciting thing will be the SHADOWS residency.
SHADOWS will be taking place at Cova Santa from the 12th of July until the 13th of September. More information available here.
