DJ Cream shares his Top 5 studio tips

Thomas Gaboury-Potvin
Interviews, Studio Tips
29 May 2019

Grown up immerse by Bologna’s overwhelming music scene, Dj CREAM has demonstrated a deep passion to every facets of House vibes. Skills, energy and youth enthusiasm finely blended together had enabled this talented artist to quickly discover a unique state of sound demonstrated in his journey behind the decks through a pinpointed digging activity. MPC lover following ‘Art of Sampling’ imprint, Dj CREAM productions can offer a solid groove constantly floating within each project presented by the HOMEQUEST Crew. His next EP alongside Black Loops is coming out really soon on his own label Smile&StayHigh. You can read his 5 studio tips while listening to his new EP. Enjoy !

1. Essential Gear

You don’t need a lot of stuff to make what you like. You only need to know what you have and bring it to the next level, I saw a lot of artists that are working with a really cheap set up or maybe only a computer…but when you hear their tracks it seems that they were in a 1.000.000€ studio! So it’s just about knowing what you got and how to use it properly.

2. Compare with other friends/artists

I had the opportunity to meet and talk with a lot of artists, and after every meeting I was learning something new, so don’t be scared to ask for tips! There is always  knowledge to share and something to learn!

3. There’s always a way to find a new inspiration

Sometimes when I feel stuck in one track or maybe I need a “breath of fresh air” I call a friend in studio and we start jamming together, you can have a different vision and often a new inspiration! Doing music with friends is one of the things that I love the most.

4. Invest in the quality of your listening

Room, monitors and Audio Card these are the most important things in my opinion. You can have all the synths, samplers and drum machines of this world but if you can’t hear properly it will be a big problem because you will never have 100% from your set up. So first your room, make sure that sounds good, you can do homemade bass traps and so on… nowadays there’s a lot of tutorials online about this. About the audio card Motu is one of the best good-value out there same for the Yamaha HS7 Monitors.

5. Place a Goal

Keep the focus on your objective no matter what, believe me sometimes it takes a lot of patience, a sacrifice but if you think that is really what you want to do just keep going, the small achievements you’ll reach along your way will give you the right inspiration!
