Monkey Safari’s third album comes in perfect time for the summer sunshine. The duo follow up their last LP, ‘Odyssey’, with this warm, inviting collection of music designed to brighten your day and complement the glorious sunny days that bless us during the summer.
Sven and Lars learned some valuable lessons from their last long-player, and the new album ‘HI’ comes from a far more relaxed, easy-going place. An organic project that came together quite naturally, their third album sees the duo in high spirits ready to bring a large dose of positive vibes and emotional depth to the party.
‘Shangri La’ is a slow burner that wouldn’t feel out of place on the Playa at Burning Man. The sultry cut builds into a crescendo of emotive sounds with a break in proceedings leading into a spine-tingling drop.
With Lars about to welcome his first child, the duo are clearly full of goodwill, optimism and good vibrations and ‘HI’ is reflective of this positive headspace. You can listen to the full premiere of ‘Shangri La’ exclusively on When We Dip while reading the cool interview we did with the duo. Enjoy !
WWD: Hi guys, how are you? How has your year been so far?
Hey, thanks for asking, we are as fine as our year has been so far, meaning pretty awesome! We have been touring a lot internationally lately and it’s always nice to travel the world and to get to know new venues.
WWWD: Your new album “HI” will be released on June 21. It seems as if you are going back to the roots with the sound of your new album. Everything sounds more positive and summery compared to the darker sound on your last album and EPs. What happened?
I think at some point we decided to take a step back from the darker sounds and not to get influenced too much by the techno hype that has been happening lately. With this being said, we were able to produce a new sound that reflects our personality and what we are truly feeling. Our music is much more melodic and emotional now.
WWD: The cover-artwork and the music video for ‘HI’ look a lot like 70s collage style. Where did this inspiration come from?
The cover art basically fits the sound of the music that we produced for ‚HI‘. We have always been loving the connection of a modern style and older vintage elements as well. You could also see the new album as a collage of our musical path from the last decade.
WWD: Whats your inspiration for the tracks you do?
We usually get inspired by the clubs we travel to, other artists or other music. It doesn’t even have to be electronic music that gives us new ideas. I think you can basically find Inspiration everywhere you want, if you are just open to do so.
WWD: How does a studio session look like for you guys?
As inspiration comes and goes as it likes, a session in the studio never looks the same. Sometimes it’s just a tiny idea that you start working with and try to build up a whole sound out of it. And sometimes you wake up with an entire song in your head. That’s the best thing about working creatively for me: You never know where it is going to take you.
WWD: Where are you in the world right now and what have you been up to recently?
Since we just got back from our bigger Australia and Asia tour, we are enjoying some home and family time right now before the big festival summer starts which we are really looking forward to.
WWD: Thanks for speaking to us, Monkey Safari!
Cheers, guys 🙂
