2019 saw the first release from Weska without a label, a new path for the young Canadian artist as plans to develop his own collection of self-released titles now reaches its 4th this May. After being signed to Drumcode where he had huge success with his collab with mentor and friend Bart Skils, as well as Suara and Kraftek, he has gained some huge momentum which continues into 2020.
Offering 3 massive tracks; ‘Lyrebird’ and ‘Catalyst’ have been played regularly by Adam Beyer, during his Ultra b2b with Maceo Plex, the Drumcode party at Space the same week, and of course the mega Tobacco Dock party in London.
First up is ‘Primer’. A gargantuan warehouse groover full of nuanced sonics, clever percussion orchestration and that all important hip shaking x-factor. ‘Catalyst’ is darker and bass heavy. Vocal shots fire off alongside dystopian sweeps and dark FX, the low end firing throughout. Building pressure and tension organically, the big payoff comes with the breaks as the energy increases with each drop.
Finally, ‘Lyrebird’ takes a more deliberate machine funk stance from the off. Acidic notes ricochet all around building on the train-like energy of the percussive underbelly. After laying the groundwork, melodics raises the energy even higher midway.
You can now listen to the full premiere of Weska’s ‘Lyrebird’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
