2020 has been a crazy year, but through all the mayhem there are still some good news stories. Cosmic Boys are one such example with 2020 being a breakthrough point in their career with a Beatport No.1 made in collaboration with UMEK, and since then they have continued to top sales charts on many of electronic music leading download stores.
Currently located inside the Techno Top 10 on Beatport with a remix of Mark Reeve, their next EP is forthcoming via their own label Legend which has been equally successful as its owners these last few months.
Confident that the Cosmic Boys are yet to peek in their current interstellar trajectory, we decided to catch up with them to find out what is next and discover more about their story so far.
WWD: Hi Guys, it is great to be talking with you today. What part of the world are you currently based, and why did you decide to call yourselves the Cosmic Boys?
Hi ! Nice to talking with you too! We are based in Pérols (Close to Montpellier), in the south of France where we get sun almost all year round.
About our name “Cosmic Boys”, we were looking for what to call ourselves and it was Sebastien that thought the name while he slept. He woke up in the night at 4am with that name on his mind, and we both agreed it was the perfect name for us, as it totally corresponds to our music and our universe!
WWD: So far 2020 has been a bit of a crazy year, what has it been like for you guys, as going off your release schedule it seems you have been keeping rather busy?
Yes, musically we are incredibly happy with our start to 2020. For the last three months we have been the N°3 top selling techno artists on Beatport, and according to Beatstats we are N°10 top selling Techno artist of the year.
We are delighted with our releases results on our Legend label, plus our collaboration with UMEK and solo EP on 1605.
Over the last 3 months, Legend is in the Top 10 bestselling Techno labels on Beatstats. We launched it only 1 year and a half ago, and we are really enchanted with the strong identity and the universe of the label. We really do, do what we love, and work with artists who through their music continue to expand this unique universe that we created.
About our own release, “Evolution” that we did in co-production with Umek and released on 1605 was N°1 Techno on Beatport during the lockdown. It was incredibly special for us because despite this difficult period, we saw that the music was louder than anything.
The second release that has been super special to us this year, is the track “Jarvis” which we put out on Legend. This track was chosen by Warner Bros to be included in an episode of a Netflix series. The title of this track is the name of Sebastien’s French bulldog, which made us even more proud!
WWD: We have supported many of your releases on When We Dip, but there might be a few people who discovered you only recently. How long have you been making techno, and what makes your sound special?
Before being Cosmic Boys, we were already producing each on our side. Seb has been producing music for 15 years and Gaby has been making music 16 years. Cosmic Boys was born 8 years ago, and the combined style is a mixture of our two worlds which is Techno Pump Minimal for Sebastien and Melodic Techno for Gaby.
WWD: What do you feel has been your biggest release to date, and it does not have to be the one that sold the most if there is different a track that marked a turning point in your career?
There are two tracks that changed our career the most. The first is “Titan” which is a Minimal track we made in 2017 that placed N°1 on Beatport, and the second is our co-production “Evolution” that we made with UMEK as it’s the first time we placed N°1 in Techno on Beatport. We thank all our fans for this, as you guys and gals mean the world to us 🙂
WWD: Your most recent release is a two track EP on your label Legend called “Digital Love”, please could you share a bit of info about what inspired the ideas behind those productions?
Good question haha, during the confinement we worked a lot of technic and on our sound design quality. Soon as the lockdown finished we were excited to meet up and test out the new VST synths and plugins we had been learning about. We are both big fans of Marvel Comics and astronomy so during lockdown we had found time to geek out on those other interests, and I think that also influenced the tracks which have an epic sound.
WWD: When in the studio, do you guys always start a new idea together, or do you work individually and only start to collaborate once you have a foundation to work from?
In the studio we always do everything together and nowadays never produce one without the other.
WWD: We mentioned before your label Legend, how do you decide which of your tracks to self-release and the ones to put out on other labels?
Usually we don’t decide if this track must release on Legend on another label until the end when we look at our schedule. If there is a space in our labels schedule then it’s important to fill that gap, but if Legend is fully booked, we must decide to wait before release the tracks or send it to some other labels. We also don’t like have big gaps between releases of our own music so this is another factor we music consider.
WWD; What is next in your release schedule, do you have anything you want to tell our readers about?
Regarding our next releases on Legend, we have our “Digital Love EP” coming out on August 14th and another EP called “Second Life” in September with a remix by Audiomatique and AKKI. Then, we signed a new artist to Legend called Oscar Escapa who will release an EP in October.
We also have a big surprise planned for the end of the year… something special is going to happen with a track from 2007! It was a Legend haha.
For other labels we are preparing new demos for 1605.
Finally, we want to tell our public that we miss them a lot! We cannot wait for everything to return to normal so we can go on tour around the world again, as we really miss connecting with our fans who come watch us preform live!
