EDGE begins the summer season by welcoming Dimuth K to the label for his debut EP. The Sri Lankan artist has been at the heart of his country’s progressive music scene since first appearing in 2018. As one of the genre’s most highly touted talents, Dimuth’s combination of rhythm and musicality has led him to releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s Hope Recordings. Now fresh off an EP for Beatfreak Recordings, Dimuth makes his much-anticipated EDGE debut with ‘By the Anchor’.
Spread across three tracks it’s the title and showcase piece which gets the journey underway. Dimuth displays his broad production chops here with dulcet beats, warm bass swells and layers of organic percussion anchoring a choir-like overlay and bubbly electronics. Subtle yet poignant, the main break continues to elevate mood, with a wave of hazy harmonics and tonal clusters rising to a heavenly conclusion.
The EP’s second selection ‘Aphelion’ leans closer to peak time territory. Punchy beats, electric rhythms and buoyant percussion set the piece in motion, as dreamy atmospheres and fragmented melodies encase the framework. Intriguing vocal samples further the narrative, perfectly foreshadowing a heartfelt centrepiece, highlighted by transcendent arps and poignant tones, before ultimately getting washed away into a driving finale.
Shifting into deeper territory the release is rounded out with ‘Early Daze’. Smooth and serene, it showcases yet another side of Dimuth’s studio repertoire. Wavy arps percolate on a bed of warm bass tones, as rolling percussion adds momentous drive. Meditative and hopeful, the track’s centrepiece flows through pleasing modulation, subtly creating peaks and valleys as a gentle rush of noise sparks a glowing final act. Replete with reflective qualities, it’s a blissful finale to a stunning collection of music from Dimuth K, one which furthers the Sri Lankan’s far reaching studio skills and notches another memorable release for EDGE.
You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘Aphelion’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
