The musician, who was best known for his 1993 hit I Like To Move It, was found dead in Miami Beach, Florida, according to TMZ. A cause of death has not been revealed and the circumstances are not yet known. Erick released his biggest hit under the pseudonym Reel 2 Real, which has featured heavily in the Madagascar films.
In August, the DJ turned himself in with his attorney following the results of a rape kit that tested positive for his DNA. Morillo denied the allegation. The allegation related to an incident in Miami Beach in December 2019, with a woman telling detectives that she went to Morillo’s home with another woman after a party on Star Island at which they were both DJing.
According to the Miami Beach Police Department’s arrest report, the woman alleged that the music producer ‘made several advances towards her, some sexual in nature’ while they were in the pool, ‘but she refused all of his attempts’. The accuser alleged she had ‘flashes’ of the DJ performing a sex act on her and recalled him ‘penetrating’ her, also claiming she felt ‘post sex pain’. The woman called 911 after leaving the house, with police searching the residence and taking DNA specimens.
A rape kit has came back for Morillo’s DNA. At the time, Erick’s lawyer told Page Six: ‘Mr Morillo’s arrest is based on an incident that occurred back on December 7, 2019. Since then, Mr Morillo has fully cooperated with the police. It is important the public understands that the police report contains mere allegations and Mr Morillo is presumed innocent.’
‘There is more to the story than what is in the initial police report, and I look forward to sharing this evidence as I defend Mr Morillo in court. Our system of justice requires that an accused is treated fairly and with due process.’ The lawyer added: ‘Mr Morillo will be exercising all of his constitutional rights and I am confident when all of the evidence is presented in this case, justice will be served, and Mr Morillo will be vindicated.’
