Oscar L’s star continues to rise for Adam Beyer’s labels; after a trio of Truesoul EP’s between 2017-2019, he stepped up to make his debut on Drumcode in 2020. With a new year comes a fresh Truesoul offering, comprised of a triumvirate of cuts fit for different musical moods.
The Spanish artist expands his repertoire with ‘Under My Skin’, the title track is a perky groover driven by deep bass stabs and a cheeky vocal that will be familiar to many. Keep ‘X’ in your back pocket; it’s a weapon that builds like a sky scraper and is made for peak-time moments, when the opportunity arises. ‘Sharing With You’ was debuted at BPM Costa Rica in January 2020 and is a chugging, vocal-led gem with plenty of low-slung energy.
You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘X’ exclusively on When We Dip while reading the great interview he gave us. Enjoy!
Set to drop his fourth EP on Adam Beyer’s Truesoul imprint, Oscar L has become a doyen of rolling groove-packed house and techno. When We Dip catches up with the Spaniard to hear how he’s been faring during lockdown, gets some tips on staying creative and finds out about some exciting projects he has coming up.
WWD: What was your vision for ‘Under The Skin’, your new EP on Truesoul?
I am just trying to continue delivering good music with my own signature sound; a mix between techno and something more melodic with groovy beats.
WWD: Tell us about the experience of making techno during a pandemic when we have no dancefloors? How does your approach in the studio differ?
Actually, it is not easy. Most techno artists get inspired by feelings from the dancefloor and without this hook, building up our music is more complex. I’m trying to imagine what people want to feel or they need at home while they are listening to electronic music (not just techno), so that I can go into the studio and make this magic happen.
WWD: How have you managed to stay motivated during these times? Do you have any tips?
Keep busy doing different things; for example, I’m web developer too, so I like to study new technologies to do websites. It’s important to keep the mind fresh by working out at home, enjoy time with friends etc. I think that we have to focus on the bright side of this pandemic and to do all these things that we normally never have time for.
WWD: Please share some arts and culture recommendations – any music, books, film/TV, art etc that’s inspired you in recent times?
I love to watch documentaries about almost everything, but about astronomy is my favourite. “Through the Wormhole” is a science documentary television series narrated and hosted by the actor Morgan Freeman. I already saw it but I started to watch it again. Highly recommended!
WWD: What does a typical day for Oscar L look like – from first morning coffee to bed time?
I usually wake up around 8/9 in the morning, I like to have a good breakfast, avocado toast with one egg, pineapple, orange juice and café late with a small chocolate bar 🙂 Then I organize my house. I live alone and I like to have my house clean and ready. After cleaning, I go down to the studio and reply the emails and catch up with my manager Sergio. He always has tasks for me, keeping the work flow every day. After lunch, I start with the creative process in the studio. I like to work till 19h in the evening and then do a work out at home, which is the perfect way to finish the day for me. I take a shower, I have dinner, watch TV and repeat, it’s a very typical life.
WWD: What are the rest of your musical plans for the year?
I’m exploring new styles under a new alias, working to do an album under this new music project because I want to introduce it to the industry in the best way. I have some collabs and releases on the way with great artists and a remix of a classic house track for a very well-known label. Lots of new stuff to come out during the year 🙂
