WWD: Thanks for joining us Lujain! Where in the world are you right now?
Thanks for having me here. I’m currently in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
WWD: What has been on your agenda this week so far?
I’m currently busy shooting a TV series for MBC till mid April. I’m also working on a new mix that I will release soon.
WWD: Can you tell us about how you first got involved in film and directing?
I was always interested in capturing moments and curious about how films were put together. So my friends recommended I work on a film in 2016 and at that time I started as a stylist and worked behind the scenes, then I moved into the assistant directing team to be more involved with all departments since I was more interested in scheduling, budgeting and producing.
WWD: What projects have you been working on recently?
As a DJ, I’ve recently worked on my two new mixes with MDLBEAST Freqways and MDLBEAST Frequencies.
As a filmmaker I’ve worked on many projects such as The Book of the Sun directed by Faris Qodus last year and produced by the Red Sea International Film Festival.
I’ve also worked on Cherry (2021). It’s an original Apple TV film directed by Russo Brothers. In addition to that, I’ve worked on AlAsha, an original Netflix short film that will take place in (2022). Currently, I’m working on Ureem 2, a TV series for MBC.
WWD: How did your love your electronic music develop?
I came to realize the potential electronic music can achieve, it’s so powerful because it’s limitless in what it can do. This made me want to delve even deeper and develop my skills in this field.
WWD: When did you launch the Biirdperson project?
Biirdperson was launched in 2018.
WWD: How would you define your sound?
A lot of DJs focus on one sound. But for me, I like to play lots of different sounds in my mixes. Mainly Housey, Groovy with a touch of minimal.
WWD: The Saudi electronic music scene is on a rapid rise right now. How have things been developing over the last few years?
I think the underground music scene really started to come together as a community in 2018. After that year the underground electronic music scene was developing really fast and then MDLBEAST Soundstorm festival happened. The Saudi music scene is in the shaping process right now. I’m super excited of what’s coming ahead of us as DJs, Musicians and Artists.
WWD: Who are the standout Saudi artists for you right now?
I’m always inspired by many of its pioneers such as, Vinyl Mode, Hats and Klaps, Cosmicat, Varoo and Baloo.
WWD: Do you have any particular goals for 2021?
I’ve been a filmmaker for a six years now, and 2021 for me is the year of music where I’ll focus, develop and delve deeper into the music as a DJ.
WWD: What else can we expect from Biirdperson over the next few months?
More music mixes.
