A while ago, Francesco aka Soma Soul had the chance to visit Canada. He loves to get inspired by cold, rural areas and landscapes so he felt like exploring and found that magic place after driving almost 300 kilometers from Banff to Jesper National Park: an amazingly beautiful area. Even though the roads were covered, he got off the car and walked further – and finally was rewarded with a wonderful view of a lake and a waterfall – the Athabasca River!
It is surrounded by beautiful mountains and forests – and Francesco immediately knew that he wanted to capture this moment and honor it with a hint on one of his next EPs.
It seems like that spark of inspiration lasted until he was back in Switzerland: “Back home, I tweaked my prophet 6 buttons and created this moving bassline, layered it with the same sound in the higher key and was really happy with how it sounded as I wanted to recreate these acoustics or feelings between the mountains of reverberation”.
When Francesco sent the idea to his musical soulmate Ed Begley, he knew that his voice would be a perfect fit for this one. And it is indeed!
The first time Lehar listened to the original version he felt touched by the lyrics and the beautiful voice of the singer. He created a clubbier version of the track that you can listen to in full premiere exclusively on When We Dip. We also chat with him about the remix, workflow, and other things. Enjoy!
WWD: Hi Lorenzo, thanks for taking the time to chat with us! What have you been up to lately?
Ciao guys and thank you so much for premiering my remix. I’m back from a beautiful weekend in Sarajevo where I recorded a set that will be streamed this weekend and I had the chance to play as well in an intimate party. It was great to play again a gig with people after months of forced stop.
WWD: Today, we are premiering your remix of The Sound Of The Athabasca River, a beautiful track from Soma Soul released on Edu Imbernon’s Fayer label. What is the idea behind the remix?
I tried to write the music around the wonderful lyrics, I used only that as a reference, this was the first thing that made me choose this remix. I’m so glad to remix Soma Soul and to work with Edu on Fayer.
WWD: Soma Soul got inspired for this track on the stunning landscape of the Athabasca river in Canada. When creating, where or how do you find inspiration?
Funny because I was on a mountain weekend as well here in Italy when I was working on it so I got inspired as well from a similar landscape.
WWD: How is the process and your workflow when remixing? What gear do you have in the studio?
I used to have many machines back in the days, nowadays I love to have a simple studio with few machines which I know very well. My workflow is usually very intense for 3-4 hours which is the time I spend daily in the studio. I don’t like to spend more than this time otherwise the creative process became affected.
WWD: Italy has been one of the countries where the pandemic has hit stronger. Has this fact affected you somehow in your music?
Pandemic was a chance to breathe a bit and think about myself and my life. Let’s say we tried to take the best from it 🙂
WWD: To close this interview, we would like to know your plans for the next months. How are they looking?
Next months looks very good with many upcoming gigs and tours and a special residency for the summer with Musumeci 😉
Also from the release side, I have many upcoming things to name few labels I’ll release soon on Multinotes and Diynamic…
Thanx a lot for chatting with me !
