With killer releases on standout imprints like Disco Halal and Soulfooled already in 2021, Miami-based Kate Ozz is making a play for an unparalleled breakout year. Not only has the Moscow artist been impressing with new releases, she’s also fast garnering a stellar reputation behind the ones and twos in her adopted city, in the idyllic Tulum and beyond. We had the pleasure of catching up with her this week to get the lowdown on her journey so far and her plans for the future!
WWD: Hi Kate! First, thank you very much for taking the time to answer a few of our questions! Where are you in the world right now and what have you been up to this week?
Hello, it’s a pleasure for me. I am currently in Russia, Moscow. This is more a family and friends trip but I have some interesting projects I will work on here. I always wanted to do something special in Moscow, and soon will share it with you!
WWD: Although you’re originally from Moscow, it’s the Miami club circuit that has allowed you to rise through the ranks in the past couple of years. How was that transition coming from Russia to Miami?
I love living in the USA as much as in Russia. I love my mother country a lot! Since I started my music career in Miami there was no transition.
WWD: How do you think this journey has influenced the music you make and play out?
I won’t say this journey has influenced the music I am making and playing out. I think an artist’s professional growth doesn’t depend directly on the place where you live. I am travelling a lot – I love different cultures, food, vibes, energy, nature, people – these all inspire me as an artist.
WWD: Listening to your tracks, the first thing that jumped to my ears was the catchiness of the records, almost like an 80s pop appeal to them. What attracts you to that sound?
Yes, its true, I love classic 80s…those songs known by everyone and different generations. At the core they are about something we can all relate to – love. And I love to remix those songs to give them new, modern sounds.
WWD: What are your musical influences?
My musical influences are very different, and ever changing. As an artist it all depends on my mood, where I am and who is surrounding me.
WWD: You’ve played shows at Do Not Sit On The Furniture in Miami throughout the pandemic. What was that experience like?
The lockdown gave me more time to work on music and to focus more on my inner self and find things that inspire me which led to the releases you have heard and will be listening to in the near future. This period turned out to be the most significant and transformational time for me. I played at one of my favorite places “Do Not Sit On The Furniture” in Miami right when they opened with the joy that everything was finally getting back to normal.
WWD: In a more optimistic sense, are there shows or specific venues you’re looking forward to playing in when touring resumes?
My wildest dream is to play at a big festival. Looking forward to Tomorrowland, Burning Man and a special for me as a Miami girl – to perform in my hometown, at Miami Ultra Festival.
WWD: Aside from music, what tends to trigger your creativity?
I am crazy about my work and music. When you love what you do it gives you so much energy and I am happy to share it with people. Besides of music I am practice yoga and meditate a lot. I also like extreme sports such as wakeboarding, car sports, racing, skydiving…
WWD: Thanks again for being with us! What else can we expect from you over the coming months?
Right now, I can’t share a lot with you, but I can say I have upcoming releases with Frau Blau record label. Also I have a few great remixes on the way. I am picking up a few shows over the summer and working on new productions.
