Following the recent release of ‘The Tide’, we caught up with the guys from pølaroit and Verboten Berlin to learn more about the process behind the track. ‘The Tide’ focuses on the perpetual quest for balance in life, in the face of its challenges, or rather its recurrent ebb and flow. pølaroit’s ability to convey the organic, human touch through electronic music, in collaboration with Verboten Berlin’s oscillating vocals, creates a gripping track that exudes the everchanging, up-and-down nature of life.
WWD: Hey guys, welcome to When We Dip! Can you tell us a little bit more about how you have met?
pølaroit: Friends of our label Ki Records remixed Verboten Berlin. Then we came across even more music from the guys and were blown away by the creativity in their tracks.
Verboten Berlin: Hey hey, we met the pølaroit guys over the good old internet, we believe it was IG of course.
WWD: Why have you chosen to collaborate on ‘The Tide’?
pølaroit: We always wanted to work with a different duo that uses a lot of analogue synthesizers and is creative with the drums. Alex’s voice (VB) is unique and fits perfectly with our music.
Verboten Berlin: We checked out the music of pølaroit and liked what we heard…so it was a bit of a no-brainer to work together and try out some musical ideas.
WWD: Can you tell us more about the track? What is the story of ‘The Tide’?
pølaroit: The basic idea of ‘The Tide’ actually came about on our synthesizers. We quickly realized that we needed an organic sound. For that, we had a bassist friend in the studio who recorded the bass line and a few effects for us. Next to the beautiful vocals by Alex, that’s exactly what creates the feeling of the song. The lyrics deal with the constant search for “balance”, to keep striving through the ebb and flow of life.
Verboten Berlin: Somehow the instrumental that the guys sent inspired us to write something soothing and natural if that makes sense. We just started to vibe and look for fitting vocal melodies.
WWD: What did each side bring to this collaboration track? Can you perhaps describe the production process more?
pølaroit: As already mentioned, we started the song together with a befriended bassist of ours and quickly realized that something special was missing. By chance we heard a new release by Verboten Berlin and noticed straight away that this was our missing link. So, we sent them the instrumental demo and were lucky that VB liked it. Alex’s voice added the human touch that we wanted to transport into our music and the energy of their vocal chops brought the song to life. It went pretty quickly that we got every missing piece together.
Verboten Berlin: The pølaroit guys brought the beats and we brought the heat! Haha. In all seriousness, as we described we were just looking for the right vocal melodies first, on top of the beat and then at a later stage, we thought about the lyrics to tie it all together. Lyrically, ‘The Tide’ deals with the ebb and flow of life in general, the ups and downs we all have and how to just keep on flowing.
WWD: Any plans for more tracks together soon?
pølaroit: Our album is almost finished, and we look forward to sharing it with the world. After that, we definitely want to do something together again.
Verboten Berlin: Let’s see what the future holds, and you never know…
WWD: And what about your individual plans for the second half of the year?
pølaroit: The live performances are slowly starting again, and we are really looking forward to playing in front of an audience again. We are also planning a streaming event and, as already mentioned, we are in the final stage of the album.
Verboten Berlin: We just played a few live shows and also some “streaming shows” for big YouTube channels and some of these concerts were filmed and we will release some exciting videos soon. And of course, there are new singles and collaborations on the way… stay safe and see you soon!
