An artist with a growing portfolio of production credits to his name, Jayden Klight returns to Particles with his debut original EP in the shape of ‘Attraction’. With his music signed to the likes of Sound Avenue, Dream Culture and Seven Villas, the US-based artist has already released Particles remixes for Espen in mid-2020 and Loveclub, Mariner + Domingo a year later.
Full of organic and deep house credentials, the title track opens the EP with its delicate blend of motifs and sumptuous chord progression. A complex percussive groove and counterpoint melodies add depth as the track evolves, ‘Attraction’ giving way to ‘Subtraction’ and a clicking, popping rhythmic backdrop. A glorious array of stereo-panned effects and atonal soundscapes shift in a rich aural collage as a powerful beat and subtle phrases have free reign in the second half. ‘Distraction’ provides a more upbeat vibe with its sultry chords and free-flowing piano. Set against a ticking percussive backdrop, a panoply of new sounds and effects create a timely late summer feel. Closing the quartet of original offerings, ‘Refraction’ combines an organic and deep house feel with its long reverb tails and lengthy delays scattered liberally across melodic phrases and plentiful effects. Dizzying arps and organic instruments ripple across the second half as a broken beat anchors the luxurious melodic melange.
Fresh from the collaborative ‘Des Magiciens’ on Nie Wieder Schlafen, Luis Leon and Haider Uppal make their Particles debut. Already a veteran of such high-profile imprints as L’enfant terrible, Manjumasi and Kindisch, Peruvian artist, Luis Leon is a rising force with his blend of organic, melodic and deep house vibes plus a smattering of electronica. Joining forces with Uppal, whose nascent career has seen releases on Traum, Oleeva and Dream Culture, the Luis Leon and Haider Uppal Revisit of ‘Refraction’ is a smorgasbord of laidback rhythmic flair, combined with languid chord phrases. Paying homage to Klight’s groove-laden original, dissonant effects and light-touch acid top line swim across the soundstage with ease as a glorious array of sounds and textures wander across the 8-minute piece.
Three new tracks from Jayden Klight and remixes from Luis Leon, Haider Uppal, and Zoi are full of magnetic ‘Attraction’. You can now listen to the full premiere of Luis Leon & Haider Uppal remix while reading the great interview we had with them. Enjoy!
WWD: What do you think would be the best activity a listener should be doing, when listening to your remix?
Haider: Meditating, contemplating, driving, or sitting in nature.
Luis: Sitting down while watching the sunset.
WWD: If this remix was a beverage, what would it be?
Haider: South-Asian staple drink to think: milk tea.
Luis: A good passion fruit juice!
WWD: Even before the pandemic we’ve had a surge of downtempo & chill music. Why do you think that is, and do you think it will continue to grow in popularity?
Haider: What Luis said!
Luis: Probably because it helped people to feel relaxed and motivated while staying at home for so long and yes I think more people are going to appreciate this kind of music, we need music that makes us feel at peace.
WWD: During the pandemic, has there been an art (music, film, etc) that most captured how you were feeling?
Haider: ‘The Black Prince’ by Iris Murdoch is the one for me. I discovered my love for reading fiction through it.
Luis: Burial album ‘Untrue’ was the perfect picture during the pandemic.
WWD: Did anything unexpected happen while you were collaborating?
Haider: We found a growth to our processes working together. Jayden’s musical parts were great to begin with. Mixing wise: with the sitar swells, I ended up discovering the true potential of EL Distressor. Its color is all over the mix.
Luis: We have different approaches while producing alone but somehow we write tracks very fast together and it’s pretty fun because the result is always surprising.
WWD: Both of you have released music on the German label Nie Wieder Schlafen in the past, do you have anything more in the works with them? Have you played any of their parties?
Haider: I wrote a lot of music in 2020 and we will be putting some of it out soon together.. About the parties, I have not yet, most importantly because the covid situation doesn’t allow. I joined their label last year and got to know these talented individuals.
Luis: We have a collaboration called ‘Des Magiciens’ which is an ambient track from my release ‘My Ears Have Tears’ and an upcoming single called ‘Dream Escape’ including a big remix from Luca Bacchetti. About the parties, we hope we can play sometime in any of them for sure.
WWD: Have you guys met in person before?
Haider: I know of Luis since the early deep-house days, but was introduced last year through Steppi. Maybe we’ll DJ in a lineup together one day.
Luis: Not yet, we are digital nerds.
WWD: What’s an artist, DJ or piece of music that had the most profound impact on your life, and why?
Haider: I discovered my appreciation for philosophy, and analog musical equipment through my friend Amr Kashmiri. He’s contributed a lot to my musical growth and appreciation of genres early on. There are many artists, DJs, and songs that can be named here so there’s no one specific answer..
Luis: I can think of Thom Yorke and Roman Flügel, they have unique ideas and sound, I feel very inspired while listening to them, especially if I go for a walk.
