Born in Stuttgart in 1987, music in a diverse array of forms was an enduring backdrop to Konstantin’s youth. In 2009, whilst a student engineer, he became the youngest resident of legendary Stuttgart club, Rocker 33 and there, two years later, Konstantin and his close friend Leif Müller started their own event series, Common Sense People. The emphasis at these parties is on providing an intimate insight into one artist, with extended sets and focused programming the basis for all their events.
Performances by DJ Koze, Roman Flügel and Levon Vincent have earned their parties a justifiable reputation across the German underground. This appreciation of truly narrative performance is pervasive, as Konstantin himself is becoming notorious for his expansive long sets. Appearances from Panoramabar to Rex Club to Trouw have only cemented his status as an innovative DJ, able to imbue any night with a pulsating energy. As a producer, Konstantin’s burgeoning reputation led to him being voted ‘Newcomer of the Year 2013′ by the readers of Groove Magazine, ahead of other lauded acts from Recondite to Disclosure.
His recent remix of ‘Home’ for Adriatique was released on Siamese and was supported by Joris Voorn, Magdalena, Kölsch, Denis Horvat, Innellea, Colyn, Kevin de Vries. He recently played at Awakenings and Tomorrowland festivals and with future events including Paradise Garten Festival in Austria, Compact x Kilometre 25 in Paris. ELSE Open Air in Berlin, Warm Up Festival in the UK, Voodoo Village in Belgium, and ADE. He was the first guest at the hugely popular Solomun + 1 at Ibiza’s Pacha this summer.
WWD: Hey Konstantin! Thanks for speaking with When We Dip. Where are you currently speaking to us from?
Thank you for listening to me 😉 I‘m currently in Marbella for a show but right now already at the airport again on my way to Awakenings and then Tomorrowland.
WWD: What have you been up to recently?
Besides playing every week, I spend a lot of time in the studio, doing the final mixdown and mastering for my latest tracks, the Remix for Adriatique of ‘Home’ and my track ‘Shake This World’ on the Afterlife VA. Since I‘m a control freak and doing the mixing and mastering on my own it took a lot of time to get these finished.
WWD: We loved your remix of Adriatique’s ‘Home’ on Siamese. How did the remix come about?
I‘m happy to hear! Adrian just asked me if I’m up for it and told me Mind Against will do the other remix. I have a lot of respect for what Adriatique and Mind Against are doing – we have all known each other for a long time and often play together on the same line ups. Adriatique’s track ‘Home’ was a huge hit, so I was happy when Adrian asked me to do a Remix of it. Before that, we once played an eight hour B2B at the Adam Tower in Amsterdam for Audio Obscura, so we had the chance to get to know each other on a different personal level, which is always a nice thing to do before working together and of course besides that, it was super fun to play together.
WWD: Which artist(s) would you most love to remix?
Hmm difficult question… it really depends on the song itself. Sometimes you listen to a song and you just cannot imagine a different version of it or putting the elements differently simply would feel weird and in that case even if I‘d love to remix the artist itself I couldn’t contribute an adequate reinterpretation of their initial idea. For remixes, I like to work with vocals, so I think someone like Rüfüs Du Sol, Drake or Grimes would be interesting for me. The last decade I’ve been lucky to be able to work with artists like Lana Del Rey, Röyksopp, GusGus, Laibach or WhoMadeWho where the production quality of the original material was already very high.
WWD: You also contributed ’Shake This World’ to Afterlife’s recent 39 track ‘Unity Pt. 3’, with proceeds from the release going to UNICEF Ukraine and Planned Parenthood. How did you come on board for the project?
A few months ago, Matteo asked me if I had something for the Afterlife Compilation. And it was a lucky coincidence that just a few days before I finished a pre-version of ‘Shake This World’ to test play it for the first time at Awakenings. I thought the track could fit. I produced it with the thought in my mind that so many things are just upside down at the moment and you feel like you want to shake this world to put everything in its right new better place. This shake can mean many different things: helping, donating, contributing, raising your voice, whatever helps. Sadly, the work of Planned Parenthood is more needed than ever. The Russian invasion in Ukraine is just deeply shocking and means so much suffering for so many innocent beings, the most vulnerable are always the children who would just deserve to grow up in peace, get proper education and a love-filled childhood in safety.
I felt honored that I could contribute at least a small piece with my track here.
WWD: You’ve been busy touring and have a busy schedule coming up. How does it feel to be back touring the world and playing festivals again after the last two years? Do you think the scene has changed much over the last two years and if so, in what way?
Honestly, I‘m just extremely grateful that I‘m able to work and to make people dance again. So I‘m happy to play every single show and definitely worship my privileges of traveling the world and bringing my music to new places even more than before. I think the scene has changed a lot which makes total sense to me. Just imagine how many young people turned 16 to 18 years all during the pandemic so some of them have never been to a festival or club before and just experienced our music and scene through social media. And many in their mid-thirties may have discovered other things to do on a Friday evening than partying and may want to stick to that, even though the clubs are open again. So, the scene changes with the audience and now it’s up to every DJ to once again win the crowd for her / him / them and adapt in a way she / he / they feel comfortable with as an artist.
WWD: What would be your dream venue / festival to play which you haven’t yet performed at?
I’ve played so many great venues and festivals over the last 10 years of touring internationally, so that’s a difficult question. Since I‘m playing a very wide range of music as a DJ and played so many funnily contrary venues and events, I have to differentiate between styles. For avantgarde techno related stuff probably Bassiani or Labyrinth festival, for the melodic side maybe Burning Man and Coachella could be fun.
WWD: Which record is currently getting the biggest reaction from crowds in your recent sets?
I don’t want to sound stupid here but it’s probably ‘Shake This World’ right now 😉 But of course it’s always also the fact that a part of the crowd knows me and my tracks and so they react a lot to my recent releases and are happy to hear them. What I also really enjoy right now playing is some unreleased stuff of my friends Kevin De Vries, Colyn and Massano.
WWD: What can people expect from Konstantin Sibold for the rest of 2022 and beyond?
My motto somehow has always been: Expect the unexpected 😉 So I have some new stuff coming for the end of the year like a remix for Ben Böhmer and Monolink but also a new EP so bets are accepted from now which genre it will be this time 🙂
WWD: When you’re not in the studio or on tour, how do you like to unwind?
In my free time I enjoy educating myself a lot about design, especially interior design, architecture and fashion. My brain is very hungry for new information, so everyday I‘m feeding it with new stuff. But what gives me the purest happiness is enjoying nature while hiking in the sun or cute (farm) animals to be honest. There is nothing more calming than cuddling with a sheep, cow or goat. Try it yourself, you‘ll thank me later 😉
