German duo GHEIST are in a fine run of form right now after their Zukunft album on their own Radau Music last year, then a high profile video which touched on the subject of mental health. Now, with a recent edit of the Disclosure – You & Me (Flume Remix), we sat down with them to find out how their summer has been, and why they chose to edit such a classic track…
WWD: Hey GHEIST, how are you, how has the summer been treating you?
We are doing very well, thank you. This summer has been a bit of all shapes and sizes for touring. I guess we spend more time at airports than somewhere else : ) But we were happy being back on track and playing music again, and we have enjoyed every minute on stage.
WWD: How different is the music you make, play and listen to in summer vs winter?
In summertime, we are more influenced by touring and playing bigger stages at festivals than in the wintertime. We all have this little winter romantic thing in us which also ensures that we are a bit more sentimental at this time.
WWD: Are you thinking about the audience, the dance floor, a certain club or setting when making music?
Yes, sometimes. When we are in the studio, a lot of influences come together. We are also always a group in the studio, which means three people want to get out their ideas and impressions. This is then always a new process in which we find ourselves again. Of course, we bring a lot of impressions from the last parties into the studio, but also from films or personal moments. All of this leads to us making the music we are feeling now.
WWD: You have recently decided to edit the Disclosue track “You & Me (Flume Remix)” – what is it that made that track special to you?
This track is one of the most precious tracks we’ve heard in the last decade. Especially the Flume Remix. It’s a Masterpiece. Actually the idea came up during an after hours party.
WWD: How did you approach it, what was the vision?
Originally we were working on this rework to create a special moment for our live show. As we were jamming in the studio we already realized that we are on to something good, but we would have never expected the feedback we were given.
WWD: You are releasing it as a free edit right, why is that?
We got a huge feedback right after the first time we played the edit in our shows, and we had the feeling that the people want to have the rework for creating new wonderful moments.
We sent the track to some dj friends and the rest is history 🙂
WWD: What gear do you use in the studio and does that matter to you?
Sure it matters a lot. We are working in a studio workspace where we always exchange gear. So we don’t just use one synth or drum machine. So when we start a track, we don’t know what’s next.
WWD: What else have you got coming up for the rest of the year?
This year started quite exciting with some changes in our team, and we got to be part of some heady projects. One of these are collaborations with some companions and new releases on other labels. In addition, we made a lot of new music in the last couple of weeks, and we already can’t wait to share this with you. We are also doing our first tour in the USA this fall and can’t wait to play in front of some new audiences.
