Joyce Muniz has many facets to her career: DJ, MC, vocalist and producer. Her second album, ‘Zeitkapsel’, released on her own imprint, JoyceMunizMusic, explores all of these. Tracing her history back from her roots in Brazil, it goes on a music journey through Austria, where she DJed at Vienna’s legendary Flex Club and began singing for the likes of Richard Dorfmeister, before landing in Berlin where she now lives as a full-fledged producer releasing on Permanent Vacation, Pets, 20:20 Vision, Exploited and International DJ Gigolo.

‘Arrivederci Bella’, the second single from the album, began with the idea of mixing samba and electro, a synthesis of two important aspects of her history. The result also turned out to be a perfect backdrop for her distinctive MC style, which brought her into the public consciousness in the 2010s when her Portuguese rapping was an integral part of Man Recordings, a label mixing Brazil’s baile funk sound with more Eurocentric bass culture.

Going through a painful breakup at the time that the music was finished, the original plan was to work on lyrics with friend and poet Wanderson Wanderley. When they spent hours, instead, talking about the end of the relationship, a follow-up text from Wanderley the next morning set the ball rolling for this to become the focus.

Set to a lithe, almost EBM groove, the words to ‘Arrivederci Bella’ (Italian for ‘goodbye beautiful’) aren’t forlorn or heartbroken. Rather they celebrate the hot, sensual nature of the relationship, almost closing the door on it – but, tantalising, leaving it slightly ajar.
