Session Victim are back to Delusions Of Grandeur following some heavyweight releases on Toytonics and Rhythm Section International. The German duo show absolutely no signs of slowing down continuing to impress with their unique sound which combines organic live elements, fat, floor-filling beats and a deep, musical approach. Here on The Intangibles EP we’re treated to three original tracks spanning high energy jazz disco meets techno, soulful uplifting house and downtempo blunted beats.

The opener ‘Motivation’ features spoken word from Ras Stimulant backed by urgent looping Rhodes stabs and an uptempo disco groove. An instant Session Victim dance-floor shaker if ever there was one, the energy cranked up to the maximum without losing sight of that all important groove.

Next up we have ‘Dromedary Twist’ which keeps up the pace but goes deeper on the jazzy organ chords and lays down a heavy syncopated bass- line which ensures the funk factor remains present and correct.

Rounding out the EP in fine style, ‘Green Run’ drops the BPM’s as we head into lazy, hazy, blissed-out jazzed-up beats territory. Lush strings and layers of analogue synths come together on this simple yet enchanting little tune which compliments the other tracks perfectly and will appeal to fans of SV’s more home-listening output from their 2020 LP Needledrop.

WWD: Love to know about your initial idea for The Intangibles EP. How long has it been in the making, and what was your original intention with this release?

Hi! There was no concept behind the EP really – what happened was that we were playing around with the Motivation beat, trying a few things like different echo pedals and such and accidently started playing a Youtube video of Ras Stimulant, that we had been watching earlier when we took a little break from the sequencer. It instantly sounded right together, so we reached out to him, introduced ourselves, showed him what we had worked on, and he was into it! We did a first, rough version with his voice, sent it to Delusions and everyone was hyped.

WWD: What are you most proud of with this record.

I’m proud of the whole EP, but especially Motivation, how it came together, and how it feels as intense and urgent as it is condensed and simple.

WWD: Which part of this EP has been the most challenging to bring together?

I would not say this EP was particularly challenging. What you hear just somehow happened, felt good and came together naturally really. It always takes a bit of discipline to commit to certain, final details and put on the right kind of jewellery as Hauke and me call it, but this EP was not as challenging as some other records we did.

WWD: Can you give us some insight into your choice on your collaboration with Ras Stimulant?

I got a bit ahead of myself and did that in the first question already 🙂 A huge shout out to Ras, you should all check his youtube channel! He has a great way of putting his thoughts and feelings into words.

WWD: With over 15 years in the business, love to hear your thoughts on how your creative and production process has changed, and how has it remained the same over the years.

I would not say it has changed at all. You learn certain things, acquire new screwdrivers and hammers for your toolbox if you will – so the range of little ways to tackle problems or just approach certain stages of writing music widens as we practise and learn – but there’s not a fundamental difference in how we make sound. In fact, we often try to enter the studio as naive and unpremeditated as possible.

WWD: What drives you to continue creating music?

The fun of it! That moment when you’re about to turn off the sampler but instead press play once more because it just feels so good. There’s just no better feeling than that.

WWD: What has been one of your most important moments from this past year?

Entering Heideglühen for the first time since Corona happened. Heide has been very important for both of us over the last years, for how we approach DJing in general. So, when we played again for the first time in April ‘22, we found ourselves in a mind state and atmosphere that was all we had hoped for and more.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that, at one point during our DJ set, I had tears in my eyes.

WWD: Where do you find the most inspiration when it comes to discovering new music?

At the record store of course! For me personally that would have to be Otterstones, Plattenrille and Groove City in Hamburg, and A&V Records and recently Kimchi Records in Berlin.

WWD: What are the values and mission of Session Victim?

Do stuff, make things. Produce AND consume, don’t just do one. Be a creator but be a fan first. Do it all for the love!

WWD: What is next for you guys?

More studio, more DJing, more live shows, more of everything we hold so dearly and more of being thankful for being able to do what we love to do so much!
