ADRIANNA is one to watch in 2023 as she builds her momentum through her DJ performances, new releases, and her own stages/events at notable venues, across the UK and Europe.
Owner of Temple House Music and graduate of the renowned Toolroom Academy, ADRIANNA is a rising star in tech house and techno, with a sound characterized by blending vocals with tough, club-ready beats, and releases on DJ S.K.T’s Stashed Music and Casa Rossa.
Like much of ADRIANNA’S work, ‘Falling’ straddles the boundary between tech house and techno, with her characteristically intricate manipulation of vocals immediately setting it apart. With the release out now, we caught up with her for a Little Talk about what’s in store of the rest of 2023.
WWD: Welcome to When We Dip! Thanks for talking to us – how’s 2023 treating you so far?
Thanks for the interview. It’s been great so far, with gigs and a couple of releases. I’m excited for this year – it’s going to be a busy one for sure!
WWD: What are your earliest memories of music?
There was always music in the home as far back as I can remember. My dad built steel drums and we had a lot of instruments a Roland synthesiser being my favourite. He had a really impressive record/tape/CD collection and I listened to all of it.
WWD: What were the first records you can remember being into, the ones that really made an impression on you?
As far as dance music goes, when I was a child in Canada in the 90s one of my favourite songs was Culture Beat ‘Turn Me Inside Out’, which was on repeat for months!! I also was obsessed with 2 Unlimited. I always loved tracks with female and male vocals together in them and a lot of energy. In the 2000’s I was listening to more electro, Benni Banassi, Felix the Housecat and I adored miss kitten as well as Roger Sanchez. These are my earliest influences.
WWD: How would you describe your music style, and who are some of the artists that you draw inspiration from?
My music style is on the harder side of Tech House to Driving Techno. Some of my favourite artists are Carl Cox, ANNA, Rebuke, Nicole Moudaber, Tuff London, and Deborah De Luca.
WWD: What were some of the most important things you learned taking part in Toolroom’s Academy?
Two things stick out in my mind: sticking to one genre when choosing sounds for a track and using reference tracks. Creatively I love to experiment and maybe because I was exposed to so many different genres, part of me wants to mix all these styles together sometimes. But for productivity, it’s really important to have some rules for structure and genre to be able to translate an idea effectively to the listener.
WWD: You’ve played some amazing venues and shows already – looking back, is there one that stands out as particularly definitive in your career so far?
I loved playing the Cafe Mambo Stage with Groovebox last year. It was the closing set, the crowd was so perfect and sometimes you just get that connection with people in the crowd and it’s like a definitive euphoric life moment. You see they feel the track in the way you felt it and you’re on the same frequency. It’s beautiful. Some of my happiest life moments are performing music in one way or another.
WWD: What can you tell us about your latest record FALLING… any specific inspiration behind this tech house banger?
I spent a lot of time in Latin America, and really gravitate towards Spanish vocals and a lot of percussion. I decided to mix English and Spanish vocals so the song can be understood by a wider audience, and I loved how they sounded together.
WWD: Tell us about your label Temple House Music – we hear you have exciting plans this year!
I’m really excited about building the label. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and aside from releases we’ll be hosting stages and throwing events. We’ve got some incredible people involved already, I’m really grateful for that.
WWD: When you’re not working on your music, how do you like to spend your time?
I love running, I try to go almost every day either outside or on the treadmill. I like yoga, I try to be as active and healthy as I can. Family, friends and going to see artists that inspire me!
WWD: What else do you have coming up in 2023 that we should be looking out for?
My next event is for Groovebox on the Cafe Mambo stage and then I’m headlining the afterparty. I have Forbidden Forest the following week and then I’m off to Portugal to play in Faro. The summer is looking really busy with other gigs in Spain and the UK. Aside from this, I’ll be focusing on my releases and the Temple House Music stages and events.
