Selador, the prominent music label, is celebrating an exciting decade, and we are thrilled to bring you a sneak peek into their birthday bonanza with the premiere of ‘Laurel’ by Murat Uncuoglu & Igor Bartyuk.
If you believed Selador was going to conclude their celebration with three editions, you’d be mistaken. Their persistence in showcasing only the ‘Toppermost Tuneage’ led them to return with a new set of epic collaborations in their Decade EP series. From face-melting bangers to soul-stirring melodies, Selador’s crate of ‘Colossal Collabs’ never disappoints.
The impending Selador Decade EP IV offers an eclectic range of collaborations that’ll undoubtedly resonate with electronic music aficionados. Apart from our premiere of ‘Laurel’ by the prodigious duo of Murat Uncuoglu & Igor Bartyuk, other tracks that caught our attention include ‘Rapid Unscheduled Assembly’ by Quivver & Dave Seaman and ‘Soul on Fire (dub)’ by Oona Dahl & Doc Martin.
In a candid interview, Selador’s co-owners Dave & Steve offer us a glimpse into their musical journey, the creation of these magnificent collaborations, and what fans can anticipate in the near future.
Join us in this musical odyssey as we dive into ‘Laurel’ by Murat Uncuoglu & Igor Bartyuk, exclusively on When We Dip. Here’s to many more years of groundbreaking music from Selador!
WWD: Hi Dave & Steve, thanks for taking the time to speak with When We Dip. We see that you have both been very busy with festivals and clubs. What has been your highlights?
Steve – Hey, thanks for having us again! I’ve had some great gigs, but my first ever mini USA tour was a big highlight for me. I’d never played in America before, and it took me forever to get my work visa, so when I finally got there, I was bursting with excitement. Starting in Denver for the wonderful Whirling Dervish crew, it was a baptism of fire, such a great venue run by an amazing team, and a particularly clued up and friendly crowd (I even went dancing on the dance floor for Dave’s set and made many new friends). The following week I DJed for Kinder Circus on a boat on The Hudson River. Looking at the NYC skyline was magical, actually breath-taking looking up at the Statue Of Liberty mid mix.. wow! And then an after-hours club in Brooklyn.. sleazy! And then flying to Vegas to play a rooftop Sunrise for Terrace Afterhours too.. I couldn’t stop smiling! As you can tell, I had a fine old time!
Dave: Yes, it has been a busy one. Highlights for me would have to be Glastonbury Festival where I had an amazing weekend as always. For me, it’s still the best Festival in the World. But also, I was twice in Ibiza, had a little tour of Argentina, reunited with my 3D sparring partners Danny Howells & Darren Emerson at Latitude Festival, had weekends in the US and Asia and Noisily Festival was great too, not least because it was in the woods just 10 minutes from my house. Right on my doorstep!!
WWD: You’re just about to release your next 10th Anniversary EP, Selador Decade EP IV and we’re delighted to be premiering Murat Uncuoglu & Igor Bartyuk ‘Laurel’ on When We Dip. How did that collaboration come about?
Steve : We’ve both known Murat for many years and always admired his music. He’s released on the label before, as well as remixing my track ‘Fenner’ a few years back. We are both big fans of his label ISOLATE, and wanted to get that kind of sound (that both Dave and I play in our sets) on one of the release so we asked Murat if he’d be interested in being a part of our birthday celebrations and before we know it, he had hooked up with Igor and delivered ‘Laurel’, which we loved from the first listen.
WWD: Selador Decade EP IV also features Dave’s collaboration with Quivver, ‘Rapid Unscheduled Assembly’. Please can you tell us about the track and the meaning behind this intriguing title?
Ha! It was a bit of a tongue in cheek dig at some of the ridiculous marketing speak that gets thrown about these days to try to cover up mistakes or deficiencies. Rapid unscheduled disassembly was the phrase Elon Musk’s Space X programme coined when their space craft blew up! This was fresh in our mind when John & I made our track in double quick speed the same day this happened, hence the slight tweak on the title.
WWD: The other two releases on the EP also feature impressive partnerships: Magit Cacoon with Lonya, plus Öona Dahl and Doc Martin. Tell us how you secured both of those as well?
Steve: We have tried to pair label friends with new artists and the two collaborations that you mentioned are prime examples of this. Lonya is a big label fave with many releases, remixes, and Selador Sessions DJ mixes under his belt for us, and I knew that he close friends with Tel Aviv’s Magit Cacoon, so we put the idea to them and thankfully, they said yes. And we’ve been a big fan of the legendary Doc Martin for many years. A stalwart of the underground, who always keeps it cool. He has always been exceptionally generous with his time, delivering two remixes for us. My inner train spotter explodes when he send us his remixes for the label, especially when he remixed my track ‘303 V’.
Dave: Yeah exactly, as Steve said we’re both big fans of Doc but also of Oona who we’ve wanted to have on the label for quite some time now. This seemed like the perfect opportunity. We knew Doc & Oona were friends and them teaming up together would produce something special which is exactly how it turned out. This whole series of Decade EPs where we’ve been able to pair together some of our favourite artists has been a joy to work on. Basically, Steve & I getting all excited about what dream teams we could imagine and then seeing them come to fruition is the best bit about A&Ring a label.
WWD: What can people expect from the next Selador Decade release(s)?
Steve: In total we have 5 EPs. And number 5 is shaping up to be another gem. We’ve been delighted with the amazing artists that have agreed to get involved with our 10th anniversary celebrations, spanning musical genres and generations, the music has been phenomenal. I don’t want to spill the beans just yet on EP5, but there are a lot of artists on there whose music I have been playing and collecting for decades.
Dave: Yeah EP 5 is for another day. First, we’ve got this incredible collection of artists on EP4 to unleash. In fact, how long do you think we can get away with celebrating our birthday for as these Decade releases have been a joy to create?!
WWD: We see you’ve got a big 10th Anniversary party happening at ADE next month. Please can you tell us some more about it?
Dave: Yes, our next party will be at ADE in Amsterdam on Saturday 21st October where we’ll be back at Boom Chicago. It’s a great venue which after us holding our party there last year, now has a full schedule of ADE parties this year. I guess you can’t keep anything secret for long these days. Especially at ADE! We reckon we’ve got the best line up though. Obviously!! Hahaha. Joining Steve & I we have Danny Howells, Miss Melera, Quivver, Cris H and Paul Sparkes and we’ll run from 5pm until midnight. So come join us if you’re in town for another trip down the rabbit hole. It’s gonna be otherworldly!
WWD: Thanks for speaking with When We Dip!
Both: Thanks as always for your support, we are feeling the love!
