In the diverse world of electronic music, Belgian producer Aytiwan has carved out a unique niche, seamlessly blending the rhythmic intricacies of Afro House and Afro Tech. Beginning his musical journey as Nico P, Aytiwan has continuously evolved, always staying attuned to the latest trends and maintaining a deep passion for his craft. Adding on to this passion, he founded Deep In Your Soul and just released a huge collaboration, ‘Es Vedra,’ so naturally, we had to catch up with the artist to talk about the track, his label, inspiration, and signature style…
WWD: Congratulations on ‘Es Vedra’ with Kaudron and Nes Mburu! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind this track and how the collaboration came about?
‘Es Vedra,’ for me, symbolizes the essence of Ibiza, an island I’ve been visiting for over 20 years. This track was born from my deep connection with Ibiza. Kaudron approached me a few months ago with an unfinished track, seeking my input. Instantly, I knew I could add my unique touch and that the track needed vocals. I contacted Nes Mburu, with whom I had previously collaborated on “Ilanga.” We’ve maintained a strong connection since our first project together. I infused the track with an Afro touch, adding and removing elements to deepen its feel. Nes Mburu then added his magical touch, and thus, “Es Vedra” was born.
WWD: ‘Es Vedra’ seems to blend elements of Afro-House with other genres. What was your creative process like when producing this track, and how does it add to the diversity of your musical repertoire?
The original track Kaudron sent me had a progressive house feel, but I felt it needed an Afro touch. I added piano elements, modified the break to make space for vocals, and tweaked the melody with some effects to align it with my style. I sent it to Nes Mburu, knowing he would elevate it, which he did. After a few adjustments, the track emerged with a perfect summer vibe, ideal for sunsets or sunrises.
WWD: As the founder of Deep In Your Soul, how do you envision its role in the Afro House scene, particularly in Europe? What sets it apart from other labels in the genre?
At Deep In Your Soul, my associate Bastiaan (Amerlegna) and I strive to provide equal opportunities for all artists. We receive numerous demos, and newcomers have the same chance to be released as established artists. Our selection is based on our passion for Afro house, maintaining a consistent direction. Our goal is to help listeners discover both new and known artists. We stay closely connected with our artists throughout the release process, offering regular feedback and communication, which is crucial in this industry.
WWD: With Deep In Your Soul gaining recognition as a fast-rising European Afro House platform, what do you think contributes to its success, and what challenges have you encountered?
The success of Deep In Your Soul is primarily due to the talented and motivated artists we collaborate with. We ensure strong partnerships, making connections between artists for remixes and collaborations, enhancing visibility and fostering team spirit. Starting as a small label posed significant challenges, especially financially, as it’s tough to stand out among major players in the genre. However, our commitment and faith have been key to overcoming these obstacles.
WWD: What do you hope listeners take away from your ‘Es Vedra’ release?
I hope listeners feel transported to summer, escaping their daily routines on a vibrant dancefloor, surrounded by sunshine, smiles, and happiness. With Chaleee’s remix, I want them to dance energetically in clubs, feeling the beat and enjoying every moment.
Collaboration is a recurring theme in your work. What do you enjoy most about collaborating with other artists, and how do these collaborations influence your creative process?
Meeting new people, whether singers or remixers, is the highlight of my work. I love collaborating with artists who inspire me, like Lizwi, Idd Aziz, Nes Mburu, and Nomvula. They are not only talented but also wonderful individuals. Similarly, working with like-minded producers like Kususa, Chaleee, Argento Dust, and others is incredibly fulfilling. These collaborations enrich my creative process and help me grow as an artist.
WWD: Afro-House music has steadily grown in popularity worldwide. How do you see the genre evolving in the coming years, and what role do you hope to play in its continued development?
Afro-House offers endless possibilities, ranging from tech to melodic and easy listening tracks. The genre is vast and includes many talented artists globally. However, with its growing popularity, some might join the genre solely for profit, missing its true essence. I recall Bob Sinclar saying to me in a voice message, “When you follow a trend, you are already too late,” which resonates deeply with me. I aim to stay true to the genre’s roots, putting my soul into my productions and DJ sets.
WWD: Beyond music, what other influences inspire your creative vision as a DJ/Producer and the head of Deep In Your Soul?
My family, especially my daughter, and my friends are significant influences. When my daughter sings one of my tracks, like ‘Isimanga’ or ‘Kele Kele’ from ‘Iphathi,’ I know I’ve created something meaningful. Nature also greatly inspires me, providing positive energy that I channel into my music.
WWD: Thanks for the chat, Aytiwan!
