S-File has been shaping the sound of techno ever since the 90s. He has released standout material on labels such as BEK Audio, UNCAGE and his own GND and Black Traxx Series imprints. He is a master of utilitarian and club-ready dynamite with driving low ends and plenty of character, and his music has received support from Ben Sims to Luke Slater. The German DJ/producer was last on Virgo in January with his ‘Restive’ EP but now offers up a superb ten-track showcase of his full sonic range with ‘Sense’ – his third LP that lands just after his standout remix of Dave Clarke’s seminal ‘Red 1’ on the Archive Box Set that Clarke recently assembled.
The brilliant ‘Function’ kicks off the LP, delivering perfectly funky techno with scintillating synth lines that add light to the linear and hypnotic drums. ‘Menace’ taps into the machine soul of Detroit with its warm, surging chords and hi-tek drum work, while ‘Souls Of Impatience’ ups the ante further with hammering hits and weight kicks topped with rave-ready whistles for an all-out dancefloor assault.
There is more Motor City synth magic to the flash stabs and pulsating rhythms of ‘Mutant Revisited,’ while title cut ‘Sense’ brings bulky, broken beat patterns and lashing percussive patterns under a female vocal that adds plenty of fuel to the fire. ‘Defiance One’ is an intense wall of percussive and synth-laced noise that washes over you repeatedly before ‘Slide Away’ slips into a more stripped-back and deep techno world with dancing hi-hats and shimmering pads.
After the driving and physical techno pump of ‘Rejuiced’ come futuristic closers ‘Three Drops’ with searching synths and ‘Fallen’ which brings trippy synth patterns that fall down the face of the skittish beats like cosmic rain, leading you into the unknown once last time.
You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘Function’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
