Italian DJ and producer, Olympe has been making waves with her captivating sets that effortlessly transport listeners to new realms of perception.
She draws inspiration from a blend of Deep Tech, Indie Dance, and Melodic Techno. Born in Parma, she began her musical journey at a young age, studying classical piano while exploring a diverse range of genres. A serendipitous encounter with electronic music charmed her during her teenage years, compelling her to delve deeper into this music’s expressiveness and experimental nature—an ongoing journey that continues to shape her artistic vision.
Her latest release, ‘I Don’t Want to Talk,’ showcasing her contagious energy with a very new, fresh groove and tuneful sound, came out on April 19th as part of the first-ever various artist compilation, ‘Rise V.1’ from Tomorrowland’s own label, marking yet another milestone in Olympe’s ascent.
We had the chance to catch up with the artist to discuss her start in the industry, big gigs, and everything in between! We’re also pleased to welcome her to the Select Cuts series with a striking mix full of surprises. Enjoy!
WWD: Thanks for talking to us Olympe. For listeners who you are new to you, can you tell us a little about your sound and artists you align with?
Thank you for having me! My sound is a hymn to life, pure energy, innovative and disruptive. I constantly search for powerful, uplifting sounds that hit you deep inside and transcend borders. I translate my experiences of traveling and performing around the world into my music, I take inspiration from the places I visit and the crowd’s energy. I respect many artists, and Kolsch is one of those I feel closest to.
WWD: Did you start your career in music young? Can you tell us a little about your early days and how you became a full time DJ?
It all started at my house in Milan 7 years ago, I was with a friend of mine who owns a club in Parma and we were listening to one of my deep tech playlists, he was so impressed that he proposed to pay for DJ lessons in change to play for his club for free for the summer. At the time I wanted to be a film director and my parents wouldn’t let me so I felt very lost. I only saw music as my safe haven, my private world where I could get in touch with my emotions. I remember as if it were now the first day of DJ lessons, it’s as if everything had aligned and I had finally found my way of communicating. From there mixing became like air in my lungs until after a while I started imagining new sounds in my head and new rhythms and felt the urgent need to start producing. A year of daily private lessons in the studio and a year of an academy of production and mixing in Amsterdam led me to produce “In The Darkness”. I sent it to Tale Of Us and they got it straight away for Afterlife Unity. It was my first released track, a dream come true.
WWD: You have studied classical piano – do you use this in your productions now? Do you think that being classically trained gives you an advantage when being a DJ?
Piano is super important for my production, I love creating new melodies and thanks to the continuous study of harmony and practice on the piano I feel much more inspired and with more tools to be more creative. The study of classical music has opened my mind and elevated my aesthetic taste. It is the most complex compositional form so I certainly find the structures of dance music simpler and I can mix more naturally.
WWD: Your list of events to come this year is extensive, including Loveland, Tomorrowland, 909 Festival, Elrow Town, Brunch Electronik and DGTL. Can you tell us some of those you are most excited about or had the best experiences so far?
For me every single event is equally important, all that matters is the magic and energy that it creates between me and the audience. The most special moments are when there is a perfect synergy with the crowd and an explosion of joy and life happens between me and them. Seeing the whole audience jumping with me and completely letting themselves go at Tomorrowland Winter is one of the many examples of great emotion I felt, where I would like to play and dance with them at the same time. I give my all on stage and I get the same energy back from the audience, I couldn’t ask for anything else.
WWD: Your most recent single ‘I Don’t Wanna Talk’ came out on Tomorrowland Music, which was your first release on the brands label, can you tell us a little about this release and what else is to come with them?
I’m particularly fond of this track. I wanted to produce something that would make me feel free from fears and useless thoughts. With the phrase “I don’t wanna talk I just wanna hit the floor” I wanted to recall the idea of following your heart and letting yourself go completely to the emotions without analysing them too much. It’s a timeless groove combined with the sound of the powerful and unique lead that creates contrast and energy at the same time. It represents a lot of what I feel when I step on stage at Tomorrowland, so it was very intuitive and immediate to propose it to their label.
WWD: Do you have some dream labels you’d like to release on and those you aspire to most?
Mine definitely and for the rest I dream very big so follow me to find out!
WWD: Finally, do you have a track by another artist which you can’t get enough of right now?
I’m quite obsessed with B.O.B – Bombs Over Baghdad by Outkast at the moment.
WWD: Thanks for the chat, Olympe!
