Oktave is a NYC based DJ/Producer, who also runs the Palosanto record label and event brand. We caught up with him recently to find out how he juggles them all, his thoughts on the NYC electronic scene right now, and to hear more about his recent single feat. Skandi Soul ‘Let Me Go.’
WWD: Hey Oktave! How are you? What’s good and bad in your world?
I’m doing well, thanks for asking! On the positive side, I’m really excited about the growth of the Palosanto agency and the new music we’re releasing. It’s thrilling to see our events and label making a real impact on the NYC electronic music scene. On the flip side, juggling the various aspects of running a label, producing music, organizing events, managing a booking agency and collaborating with artists can be demanding, leaving me with little time for myself or relaxation. However, it’s all part of the journey, and I’m fortunate to have a dedicated team working closely with me to achieve our goals.
WWD: What was the inspiration behind your new single featuring Skandi Soul on Palosanto’s music label?
The inspiration for the new single was to blend catchy club and dance floor melodies with afro house elements, reflecting the essence of our label. Collaborating with Skandi Soul, a talented South African singer, allowed us to merge his unique voice with my vision, resulting in a track that resonates with the Palosanto audience and introduces a fresh sound to our catalog.
WWD: How did the collaboration come about for this afro house anthem?
The collaboration came about naturally. After finishing the track, I was looking for a singer to elevate the project and was introduced to Skandi Soul by my friend Auguste, the talented producer and A&R for the label. I immediately felt that his unique voice, brimming with hope and emotion, was the perfect match for this release. After reaching out and discussing our vision, we found that we were perfectly aligned on the direction for the project.
WWD: Can you describe the creative process behind the new single?
The creative process involved extensive collaboration to ensure that the vocals and the track complemented each other perfectly. I began with a solid foundation of house music rhythms and then layered in soulful Afro-house melodies and elements. I made many adjustments to ensure that the lyrics and Skandi Soul’s incredible voice were perfectly integrated. My goal was to create a track that is both innovative and true to our both musical roots.
WWD: How does this single represent the vision and goals of the label?
This first track serves as an introduction to what’s to come from us. While it highlights the Afro House colors of the label, we’re also excited to explore melodic house and other influences. This single reflects Palosanto’s vision of blending traditional Afro House with modern elements and diverse inspirations to create something truly unique. Our goal is to release tracks that are original, innovative and true to our musical tastes.
WWD: What do you hope to achieve with the launch of the monthly release by Palosanto music label?
With the monthly releases, I’m committed to delivering top-notch music while staying closely connected with the Palosanto events audience. This regular cadence allows the label to introduce fresh talent, explore diverse sounds, and keep our listeners excited about what’s on the horizon. My goal is for the Palosanto label to become a key reference point for music producers and DJs, celebrated for its unique and high-quality tracks. We also want to provide a platform for emerging producers, giving them opportunities to perform at our events and gain significant exposure.
By integrating these elements, I want to foster a vibrant, innovative community in the music industry. My vision is like a “farm to table” concept: what we’re doing is “studio to stage.” It’s about nurturing talent from its origins in the studio and presenting it live on stage, creating a full-circle experience that enriches both the artists and the audience. Additionally, if the Palosanto audience connects deeply with an artist, we’re excited to offer them a spot on the roster of our booking agency, further supporting their growth and success. So please send us your best tracks if you are interested in the project!
WWD: How do you see the label redefining the electronic music landscape?
I think the best way to redefine the electronic music landscape is by seamlessly blending traditional and modern elements to create fresh, innovative sounds. My goal is to push the genre forward while staying true to my musical tastes, ensuring that I offer something both new and exciting to our listeners.
I want the music to make people dance, evoke deep emotions, and forge a strong connection with the Palosanto brand. By aligning our monthly releases with a dynamic schedule of Palosanto events, we create a powerful synergy that helps our releases gain popularity and reach a broader audience.
WWD: Can you share any challenges you faced during your career so far, or starting the label or event series?
Sure! One of the biggest challenges was just finding my unique place in the New York music scene. There’s so much out there, so I really had to work on standing out and making sure the Palosanto label had its own voice.
Handling the day-to-day details was another big hurdle. From booking artists and managing event logistics to keeping everything on budget, it was a lot to juggle. It took a lot of hard work to get everything running smoothly.
And then there’s the challenge of keeping the audience excited. I want to innovate and try new things, but I also need to stay true to what our listeners love about us. It’s a bit of a balancing act.
But honestly, every challenge has taught me something valuable. With the support from our artists and fans, with my team we’ve managed to overcome these obstacles and keep pushing forward.
WWD: What is the New York scene like right now?
The New York scene is incredibly vibrant and thriving right now. It’s packed with talented artists, DJs, and a diverse range of exciting parties. The city’s dynamic energy really fuels creativity and innovation, making it an inspiring place for electronic music.
There’s a great atmosphere where you can truly be yourself and play the music you love. This openness not only sparks curiosity but also helps in building new connections and growing your fan base.
Overall, it’s an exciting time to be part of the scene, with so much happening and so many opportunities for both artists and audiences.
