We sat down with the artist for a chat about her new self release ‘The Lost Tracks Vol 1,’ her London roots, the music industry, and more!
‘The Lost Tracks is a collection of songs that came to life across time—created in deep collaboration with some gifted musicians and producers. Sometimes sounds make more sense being heard today than yesterday. I’m learning. I don’t create to be seen—I create to exist. Not sure how long I’ll stay in the light before I slip back into my shell 🐚, but for now, this is Vol. 1.” – Megatronic
WWD: Hey Megatronic, How’re you today? What’s happening in your world at the moment?
I’m good, thank you for asking. I hope you’re well as well. I’m taking some time off before my tour schedule begins at the end of April. What’s happening in my world right now? I’m thinking a lot about last year’s body of work and how to reinvent myself within my next project.
WWD: You’ve just self-released your latest EP ‘The Lost Tracks Vol.1. Can you talk us through the release.?
The lost tracks EP is a selection of songs from my vault of music. I have been writing songs since I was 17 years old and there’s still so much material that is unreleased. In 2024, I decided it was time, I wanted to share some of these tracks with you and allow myself some form of appreciation and recognition to my younger self as a writer and this is how the concept of the lost tracks began.
Where and when was the tune made? These two tracks in particular were made when I was part of the band called Black Cherry. The tracks original compositions were written in 2010 and were remixed at the time by Producer Eagles for Hands. At the time the remixes both seemed way beyond the time that we were in and as they never received a proper release or recognition. It felt appropriate and right to release now especially with the current landscape of music.
WWD: Can you describe the connection between your music and your UK roots, and how they continue to influence your music today?
I think my roots are more specific to London than to the UK. As London is very different to the rest of the UK, I think my background heavily features in all the music I release. Whether it’s the upfront approach to the production or the smoky talking style vocals or the heavy hitting beats. London will always remain the starting point for my craft and depth within my writing.
WWD: What’s a key piece of advice you would give to your younger self at the start of your journey?
A key piece of advice I’d give to my younger self is to trust my intuition and not spend so much time taking advice from people who have no success or knowledge of the business. Just because somebody is older than you doesn’t mean they know what’s best.
WWD: What’s one thing you’ve learned about the music industry that surprised you?
One thing that I have learned about the music industry that surprised me is how incredibly difficult it is. It’s really not an easy journey and at any moment it has the ability to change. You have to be thick skinned and strong with a will to survive, as it can be so brutal.
WWD: Give us some other producers we should be listening to right now?
Producers we should be listening to right now Oliver Night, Workerz, Indian man and Kuzco. .
WWD: What’s next for you after ‘The Lost Tracks Vol.1?’ Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or collaborations you have in the works? Are there any new directions or sounds you’re exploring in your music right now?
I plan to release Volume two later in the year. The tracks will most likely be in a different direction but definitely from the same period of time.
I’m currently working on my second EP for release on Razor n Tape as well as some collaborations with Natasha Diggs, Jkriv and Diogo Strausz.
My musical direction at the moment is quite varied. I have three separate projects which cover genres like soulful house, afro house and gospel.
WWD: Finally, Which are the three records that you’ve been putting in your bag recently without hesitating?
Demuir – “music in space” – Timeless piece of house music, never disappoints
City to City: Lisbon – A compilation from freerange records featuring myself and other Producer/DJs either based or from Portugal. (Featuring KASPAR FROM LISBON / DJ HONESTY / JORGE CAIADO / MEGATRONIC / MORENO ACIDO / YEN SUNG & PHOTONZ
And obviously Megatronic “do I belong to you”
WWD: Great choices! Thanks for the chat 🙂
