This week the spotlight shines on Meteorythm Recordings – a brand new imprint emerging from mainland Europe. Headed up by talented young producers Clearvision and Caslau, the label brings a fresh Space-inspired, texture-driven blend to the table, offering a unique mix of club-oriented sounds and ambient experiences. The label chiefs stopped by to run our team through the impending debut release, which they put together alongside Paris producer Coni (check out a sample below). What’s more, they’ve detailed the ethos behind the promosing project and all that they hope to achieve.
WWD: Hey guys, thanks for being with us, you are currently starting a new project and for those who never heard about you can you introduce yourselves in a few words?
Hello! We are David and Luke aka Clearvision and Caslau. We are both from Ceres and have been friends for a while now. We decided to start our solo projects 1 year ago and more recently to create our own label.
WWD: The first 12″ from your new label Meteorythm will be out in early 2016, what’s the focus of the project?
As the name suggests, Meteorythm is a space inspired label. In fact, both of us are passionate about the scientific aspect of space study as much as we love music. It was really important for us to have our own imprint because it’s more exciting to manage all the aspects around a release, from the track selection to the artwork, the artists you want to work with and
the whole identity of the project. Each 12″ of the « File » series will be composed of one or two club-oriented tracks, one ambient and a remix of someone we think can complete this « File ».
For the first one we have two originals, First Data and Untitled Theories and a remix by Paris producer Coni. Ambient is really important for us as it, we think, emphasizes the label’s atmosphere. We hope it’s really something we will be able to develop further in the next releases.
WWD: Was there a special reason you chose Coni as remixer?
First of all, Coni is a friend of us and he’s also someone we have followed for a long time, musically speaking. We like how he apprehends music, his ability to texturize sound and the way he combines it with groove, sometime resulting in something close to experimental music. At the time we selected the two original tracks that would be released first, we spoke with him about the growing project and sent him First Data and Untitled Theories. He liked the latter and it seemed natural for us to start this adventure with him.
WWD: Caslau, you released last summer a white label on Clekclekboom recordings, how did this come about?
I have been in contact with French Fries for a while, sharing demos and stuff. One day he came back to me and asked if I would be interested in releasing two of my tracks he recently played, of course, an offer I gladly accepted. All the guys of Clekclekboom are really a family and all of them are really cool, they even invited me and Clearvision to come in their studio in Paris to meet, and jam a little bit.
WWD: You told us that ambient will contribute to the label’s spirit. So we guess that you’re not only interested in club music, what are your overall influences?
Something which fascinated us and which lulled our childhood was primarily sci-fi and the original soundtrack linked with it. In a more realistic/down-to-earth way, this may be compared with all Nasa’s sounds, like rocket launches, planets, vocal transmissions, etc… We really like what space agencies evoke, a corporate foreground but it lets your brain go further and your interpretation of their work be your own. It’s all about a mental approach and transferring emotions, that’s why we also listen to a wide range of musical genres, like Jazz or classical to name some of them.
WWD: You both have your own projects but you decided to blend your styles for the first release. How do you go about producing together?
Usually, it always starts by jamming in the studio, we never have a preconceived idea of what we are aiming for, except maybe if it will be a club oriented or more home listening track. If it’s for club, we start with the rhythm and we quickly start to jam on the synths, it often results in few notes that will set the tone of the track. Above all of that, we like to texturize it by adding samples and melodies to try to give life to the ensemble. Working together is not a difficulty for us as we kind of complete each other.
WWD: What’s next for both of you?
Caslau: I will release an EP with 4 club-oriented tracks on Malin Genie’s label and surely something on Meteorythm during the next year.
Clearvision : I made 3 originals for the Meteorythm File 002 that will include a remix from two Berlin producers we really like. I’m also working on a forthcoming release on another label.
WWD: Thanks guys for your time, anything you want to add?
Thanks to you, full support to Whenwedip !
